Dog's eye swollen, scabbed after running away. Is it an emergency?

This is a medical emergency, and Blu has to see a vet now. His eye could have been severely injured, and leaving this untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

It could be self-inflicted trauma from excessive scratching, or it may be a blunt injury from walking into something or being scratched by another animal. As there is a risk of damage to the cornea, I would suggest you to take Cooper to your local vets today to fully examine the eye and to get treatment for him.

If the eye itself is swollen, not the skin around it, then no it will not go away. The pressure of being trampled could have caused Baby's eye to exit the orbit and that can lead to blindness without prompt treatment. Baby needs to go to the nearest open vet clinic immediately.

This appears to be a blocked gland and/or infection of the eyelid. I would have to examine it more in order to tell for sure and it's best to have a vet diagnose it and prescribe the necessary treatment. These usually heal well with treatment, so it will definitely worthwhile to take him to the vet. It's not an emergency, but it's best to have him seen sometime in the next week. For now, you can flush the lesion with normal saline. Saline flush can be bought at the pharmacy, or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush the eye 3-4 times daily and gently wipe away the discharge with a warm/moist cotton or cloth. After flushing, you can hold a warm/moist cloth over the eye for five minutes. I am so glad Buckshot came home. It is hard to tell what happened to him while he was away from home but that injury looks pretty serious and needs to be examined by a vet as soon as possible. He could have injured it a number of ways. The big concern, is if he was struck by a vehicle he may have further injuries that are not visible to you. An impact can cause serious internal injuries that may not cause immediate death or notable Illness to an untrained person but are serious nonetheless. Please, get Buckshot examined by a vet as soon as you can. Better safe than sorry. It’s too bad our dogs can’t tell us what they have been through. I hope everything is minor and he heals up quickly.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thank you for the pictures as well- poor little Rudy! Yes, you will need to take Rudy into see his veterinarian. Rudy is squinting and seems reluctant to open his right eye. He may have endured trauma or injury to his eye which may have resulted in a corneal abrasion or scratch which are quite painful and need special treatments in order to heal properly. Your veterinarian will examine the eye and will stain the eye to check for corneal injury. Rudy may need to go home with antibiotic eye medications or other medications as needed.
