Why do my dog's eyes tear after eating dry food? Is it an allergy?

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dry eye is a condition where the tear glands are not adequately producing enough tears to lubricate and protect the eye. This is completely unrelated to the diet that Chloe eats, so feel free to keep her on her current food unless your vet has another reason to change her diet! Your vet will diagnose dry eye using a "Schirmer tear test", which is a special strip of paper that allows us to measure how much tear production is present. Once confirmed, dry eye is treatable with a prescription eye ointment. Hope this helps.

Yes, allergies can cause excessive tearing. Other causes include obstructed tear ducts and tiny eyelashes rubbing against the cornea (distichiasis). Have Smokey examined by your veterinarian for a diagnosis. The eye should be stained to rule out corneal injury as well. Antihistamines may help allergies, flushing the tear ducts may open them up and having the lashes plucked should decrease tearing.

There could be swelling pressing on the nasolacrimal ducts which hinders tear fluid in draining via the ducts. This can happen due to tooth root abscesses or other dental problems. There is also a possibility that the nasolacrimal ducts are obstructed and need flushing. As long as the fluid is clear and no eye infection is present, it is not something I would worry about too much, however have the tear ducts and teeth checked next time you take Bailey to a veterinarian for vaccinations or a check-up.

She could have a problem with her tear duct, allergies, or it might be that she has a hair, eyelash or something causing irritation. Since this is a chronic problem, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can prescribe an anti-histamine, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or other medications, if needed.

Hi there and thanks for your posting! Watery eyes can be a sign of an environmental allergy like pollen or dust or just caused by excessive hair growth around the eyes leading to eye irritation. You may want to try an prescription antihistimine to see if that helps at all. Diseases of the tear duct, like a tear duct blockage can also cause excessive watery eyes. Dozer could be suffering from serve allergies but lesions like this could also be signs of an autoimmune condition. Also, a bland diet is not a food trial. To rule out food allergies a food trial must be completed. A food trial will last for 8-12 weeks and during that time, Dozer CANNOT eat ANYTHING other than the diet. That means no treats, chewies or even flavored pet toothpaste. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein because it can rule out all types of food allergy. If there is not a positive response to the food trial in 8-12 weeks, I recommend to have the lesion biopsied to look for autoimmune disease. There may be clogged tear duct that is causing the dry eye and nose. The lacrimal duct connects the nose to the eye, so I would worry there is an obstruction. A dry eye can lead to an infection as it makes things worse. i would talk to your vet about an exam under sedation to flush the duct to see if this helps.
