My dog's raw, crusty eyes won't heal. What else could it be?

It’s hard to say what is exactly going on here but it does look very inflamed and possibly infected. If thenlesionnhas been there more than 2 days and/or is getting worse and is irritating to Doja I would recommend having it looked at by your veterinarian. She may need antibiotics to help it clear up. As far as food is concerned, I generally recommend Hills, Purina, Royal Canin, Iams or Eukanuba. This could be due to an eye injury (which could be from him scratching) or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. I highly recommend that you have Bentley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If this is due to skin allergies, all possible allergy types need to be considered. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

I think allergies are a possibility, there may be a secondary infection as well. Based on the locations of the lesions it could also be an auto-immune disease, as there are a few that can cause crustiness around the nose and eyes. Lastly, some endocrine conditions such as Cushings disease or hypothyroidism can cause skin problems as well. I'd have your friend take her dog to the vet so they can figure out the best way to treat it.

If you want to rule one thing at a time out, you can either do a course of antihistamines until the first frost and see if things with the eyes and skin improve as long as they aren’t miserable and itchy or change the diet first and wait to start the medication. This sounds like an environment or food allergy. The red is due to yeast proliferation from moistness in the hair. I would recommend a novel protein elimination diet for 40 days. Benadryl is a good anti-histamine but may not work as it only improves a certain type of allergy. Neosporin can be damaging to the kidneys so I would avoid using it. It also only contains antibiotics and so would not be helpful. Fish oils can also be very helpful at lowering inflammation in the body and improving skin and joint health.

It could but this could also be a sign of an eye infection. Food allergies are not the common dogs, while eye infections are much more common, so I would suspect Zeus may have an eye infection. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. He should see a vet today for this problem. Best of luck.
