Could my dog's tooth extraction cause chronic eye infection and nose?

I would be worrrid she has KCS and a dry nose from a blocked lacrimal gland so the tears are unable to to love and be made. KCS is commonly found in older dogs I would look into a consult with an ophthalmologist to see if they can flush that gland to help improve her or see if something else is going on. It is not common for them to drool from this either

There could be swelling pressing on the nasolacrimal ducts which hinders tear fluid in draining via the ducts. This can happen due to tooth root abscesses or other dental problems. There is also a possibility that the nasolacrimal ducts are obstructed and need flushing. As long as the fluid is clear and no eye infection is present, it is not something I would worry about too much, however have the tear ducts and teeth checked next time you take Bailey to a veterinarian for vaccinations or a check-up.

Hello, sorry to hear about Winnie. It can be associated with an infected tear duct, a foreign object (foxtail) in the vicinity of his eye or tear ducts, and much less likely a tooth root infection. Winnie should be evaluated by a veterinarian. A sedated exam may be best to fully examine his oral cavity, tear ducts and eyes. The only way to know is via radiographs of the maxilla. Ths can be a simple dental radiograph and of course it would also show on a CT scan of the maxillary bone. I think MRI is probably not necessary to find a root remnant.

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or possibly to a chronic rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). This may be an indication of oral pain from the extraction. I would recommend speaking with the veterinarian about pain management and add on additional pain medications. The suture used to close the extraction site may be causing some irritation as well. I would maybe have the veterinarian take a look at the mouth to be on the safe side. I hope this helps!

Hello. I’m sorry for your frustration, but some further investigation by a veterinarian is needed in order to determine what is going on. A thorough oral exam to look not only at the teeth but under the tongue, and all over the inside of the mouth for evidence of any growths, foreign bodies, etc would be the first step. This often requires sedation and dental X-ray may be helpful. Leo could also have something in his sinus or nasal cavity.....something stuck in there, a growth or polyp or just a deep seated chronic infection. Sedation to examine above his soft palate and then to flush his nasal passages would be recommended. If these things are not done to try to find the underlying problem, all you can do is continue to try antibiotics. If penicillin has been tried twice, it’s time to move on to a more broad spectrum one. However, I would be concerned that there is something more going on and the additional investigation would be best.
