Why is my dog's eye tearing frequently and she keeps closing it?

Yes, allergies can cause excessive tearing. Other causes include obstructed tear ducts and tiny eyelashes rubbing against the cornea (distichiasis). Have Smokey examined by your veterinarian for a diagnosis. The eye should be stained to rule out corneal injury as well. Antihistamines may help allergies, flushing the tear ducts may open them up and having the lashes plucked should decrease tearing.

The most common cause of tears developing on the face on the inner corner of the eyes would be a problem the the nasolacrimal or tear ducts. These are tiny tubes that connect the inner corner of the eyelids with the nostril and in a normal pet tears that lubricate the eyes will then flow through these ducts into the nostril. If the ducts become obstructed then the tears spill over onto the face. I would recommend an exam at your vet to see if this is the issue. Sometimes the ducts can be flushed and reopened.

Hello, sorry to hear about Poli. There are several things that could make dogs eyes painful so that they have to squint and tearful. Most commonly, especially if this happened suddenly, a corneal scratch or ulcer could be causing this. Corneal ulcers can take a couple of days to heal but require ointments and sometimes even lenses to protect the cornea thus allowing it to heal. Corneal ulcers can occur due to trauma, a foreign body, an eye infection, or even abnormal eye lashes or hair. Unfortunately these are quite painful and should be evaluated by your veterinarian so that they can give her any medications she may need. Other less common but more aggressive things that can cause her signs include things such as glaucoma, uveitis, and foreign bodies. These can also be ruled out by your veterinarian. It's possible that she may need medication. If you can, wipe the area clean with a warm wet cloth. Your local Veterinarian may prescribe an ointment or drops after performing an examination. It's possible that Princess may have an ulcer, injury, or disease causing her discomfort.

It's not possible know exactly what's happening with the eye, but it's definitely hurting badly if it's swollen shut. It could have gotten hurt from something hitting the eye, or she has an infection in the eye, or in the tissues surrounding the eye. The only way to tell what this is, is to have a veterinarian examine the eye. I recommend having this done in the next 24 hours to help prevent her from being in pain and possibly save the eye from irreparable damage. I hope that helps and Dogz gets better soon.

Poor girl. White discharge from the eyes can indicate either a dry eye conditon or the beginning of an allergic conjunctivitis (allergies causing inflammation of the eyes). If she is also sneezing and rubbing her eyes from irritation, then chances are she has allergic conjunctivitis. You can discuss with your vet about trying some over the counter or vet prescribed antihistamine medication to try and help with this. Your vet may want to examine her first just to make sure we are on the right track with her diagnosis and treatment recommendations. In the meantime I would continue to apply warm compresses on her eyelids (while holding them closed) and Henry cleansing the discharge as needed to prevent irritation around her eyes. It is really hard to say for sure. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a good exam. Since it is her eyes that are affected it is important to make sure she does not need medications/eye drops to resolve the issue. If it is related to allergies you can try an over the counter anti histamine and possibly place a warm compress on the eyes 2 times a day to help remove debris and decrease inflammation.
