Dog eye ulcer: Is meloxicam dose right? How quickly will it heal?

Poor girl. In uncomplicated cases of an eye ulcer the pet normally starts to improve significantly after 7 days. I would have her seen again my your vet soon. The eye ulcer this time around may be deeper or perhaps even resistant to the antibiotic. Sometimes pets also require surgical procedures on the eye to get the ulcer to heal. Unfortunately eye pain can be difficult to treat - oral medications sometimes don’t seem to make much difference. There is some evidence that tramadol is not metabolized well in dogs so I think gabapentin might be a reasonable alternative. Ultimately healing the ulcer will be most important - if it does not seem to be healing well you may need to see a specialist to have a burr procedure or keratotomy in order for it to heal. Topical pain medication might be another option but can sometimes slow the healing process.

Hi! Glad to hear that Bella's ulcer is resolving. As corneal ulcers heal, dogs may experience some itchiness or discomfort that makes them want to paw at their eyes even including the eye that is not affected. This is why it is always advised to keep the cone on until finishing therapy/resolution. Good luck! It seems like Bella is going in the right direction.

I am sorry to hear about Luna. Unfortunately every corneal ulcer progresses differently and we cannot really predict how rapidly they will heal, particularly without seeing the eye in person as photos of eyes are very difficult to interpret. Normally with corneal ulcers I like to recheck them in a week or earlier if I feel they are bad or the pet seems increasingly uncomfortable. Some ulcers will heal within a week while others take much longer and make require advanced treatments. I would recommend calling your vet to see if Luna should be rechecked and leaving her cone on until your vet has confirmed it is ok to take it off. Best of luck to you and Luna.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry for Bella's corneal ulcer, but very glad she is doing well. If, after the final recheck on Friday, her eye still is doing great, then go ahead & have her groomed as soon as you would like. Just caution the groomer to be very careful with shampoo & water near her eyes. I would even use some of her eye ointment immediately after her grooming just to make sure nothing has gotten on the eye to cause irritation. One time should be sufficient. Hope this helps . Hello, sorry to hear about Lily. Exocin is a topical antibiotic. You should aim to apply it at minimum every 6-8 hours until her recheck. If you are able to, you should apply this drops every 2 hours for the first 2 days, then every 4 hours for 5 days as recommended. Superficial ulcers take about 3-5 days to heal and you should see significant improvement in Lily's symptoms within 2-3 days. If you are not seeing improvement by day 5, then you should have a recheck with your veterinarian promptly. Best of luck and hope Lily has a speedy recovery.

It looks like Dylan may have a melting ulcer or a descemetocoele, which is a serious problem that can result in loss of the eye. I would take him to your veterinarian right away as this would constitute an ocular emergency.
