How often should I apply Exocin drops for my pug's eye ulcer?

Eye ulcers are very complex and there is no one size fits all treatment. There are many options for treating ulcers and this is in part depends on the underlying cause of the ulcer (poor tear production/quality, inturned eyelids/eyelashes, scratches from other dogs/cats etc). The cornerstone of treatments are a lubricant drop plus an antibiotic drop (each applied 15mins apart every 2-6hours depending on severity), in many cases serum drops (prepared from the patients blood) are also used to promote healing and prevent further inflammation. Surgical treatment may also be required to clear damaged tissue from the surface of the ulcer and sometimes to protect the eye with flaps/contact lenses etc. I recommend a check up by your vet to ensure the most appropriate treatment is selected

Based on this picture, that looks like a fairly superficial corneal ulceration. Oral antibiotics are not the treatment for this sort of issue, as direct ophthalmic medications will be required. The treatment will be aimed at preventing secondary infection,, reducing inflammation / pain, and mending the corneal surface. Otis will also need to wear a cone to make sure that he doesn't try and scratch at the eye and make matters worse for himself. This issue is not life-threatening, but the ulcer will definitely get worse if it is not treated quickly and properly, particularly if he is the kind of dog that will bother at it. If you've been to the vet already, he may have put a stain in the eye and then looked with a special light to see the actual depth of the ulcer. He will be able to tell you if the ulcer is actually superficial or if goes deeper than it appears in the picture. Hope this all makes sense.

I am sorry to hear about Luna. Unfortunately every corneal ulcer progresses differently and we cannot really predict how rapidly they will heal, particularly without seeing the eye in person as photos of eyes are very difficult to interpret. Normally with corneal ulcers I like to recheck them in a week or earlier if I feel they are bad or the pet seems increasingly uncomfortable. Some ulcers will heal within a week while others take much longer and make require advanced treatments. I would recommend calling your vet to see if Luna should be rechecked and leaving her cone on until your vet has confirmed it is ok to take it off. Best of luck to you and Luna.

If the ulcer doesn't seem to be healing fast enough you should take Spike back to your vet, they should prepare some serum to put in his eye every 2-3 hours (serum is prepared from whole blood, it can be from your dog or from another dog). serum is considered the best non invasive treatment for eye ulcers.

You are correct in that most pets are started and maintained on the twice a day dosage. We can’t legally go against what your vet says without establishing a pet client relationship after physical exam, but you can do what you think will achieve the desired results for your pets itchy skin knowning that it is safe for twice daily dosage with this medication. Poor girl. In uncomplicated cases of an eye ulcer the pet normally starts to improve significantly after 7 days. I would have her seen again my your vet soon. The eye ulcer this time around may be deeper or perhaps even resistant to the antibiotic. Sometimes pets also require surgical procedures on the eye to get the ulcer to heal. It looks like Dylan may have a melting ulcer or a descemetocoele, which is a serious problem that can result in loss of the eye. I would take him to your veterinarian right away as this would constitute an ocular emergency.
