Dog eye ulcer: How long until my dog feels better after starting treatment?

That depends. A corneal lesion should be healed by 50%+ within 3 days for normal healing. The total surface area needs to be taken into account to gauge the healing. The best person to answer this question is the veterinarian who is caring for Taurie. They know how big and how deep the ulcer is. Sometimes non healing ulcers need a grid keratotomy and/or plasma drops (though this is debated). I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I am sorry to hear about Luna. Unfortunately every corneal ulcer progresses differently and we cannot really predict how rapidly they will heal, particularly without seeing the eye in person as photos of eyes are very difficult to interpret. Normally with corneal ulcers I like to recheck them in a week or earlier if I feel they are bad or the pet seems increasingly uncomfortable. Some ulcers will heal within a week while others take much longer and make require advanced treatments. I would recommend calling your vet to see if Luna should be rechecked and leaving her cone on until your vet has confirmed it is ok to take it off. Best of luck to you and Luna.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Brian is under Veterinary care and is receiving antibiotic eye drops prescribed by your vet then the ulcer should heal. Most uncomplicated ulcers heal with in 5-7 days. You should recheck with your Vet to be sure it has healed. I do not think cold air caused the ulcer or will make it worse. Dust, running into branches or other plant material may have caused the original injury so I would leash walk him and don't leave him outdoors long unsupervised until the eye has healed. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gizmo! The cloudiness likely just indicated the edema in the cornea. That can go away quickly. Superficial (not deep) corneal ulcers heal in 5-7 days. Since you can still see the ulcer and since it was deep I do not think the ulcer itself is healed yet, just the surrounding cornea. If the ulcer doesn't seem to be healing fast enough you should take Spike back to your vet, they should prepare some serum to put in his eye every 2-3 hours (serum is prepared from whole blood, it can be from your dog or from another dog). serum is considered the best non invasive treatment for eye ulcers.

I would recommend taking Sadie back in for a recheck. If the eye is very painful it may need more aggressive therapy. Many times all stars require medication every two hours around the clock. And or in some cases surgical debridement or repair is necessary. If you feel her I was not improving discuss referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist to have her Eye evaluated. Also discuss pain medication options with your veterinarian, as ulcers can be very painful. Do not give anything over the counter or that was knots prescribe for Sadie has the wrong medications can make it significantly worse. Hello, sorry to hear about Lily. Exocin is a topical antibiotic. You should aim to apply it at minimum every 6-8 hours until her recheck. If you are able to, you should apply this drops every 2 hours for the first 2 days, then every 4 hours for 5 days as recommended. Superficial ulcers take about 3-5 days to heal and you should see significant improvement in Lily's symptoms within 2-3 days. If you are not seeing improvement by day 5, then you should have a recheck with your veterinarian promptly. Best of luck and hope Lily has a speedy recovery.
