Why does my dog keep pawing at both eyes while healing from an ulcer?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry for Bella's corneal ulcer, but very glad she is doing well. If, after the final recheck on Friday, her eye still is doing great, then go ahead & have her groomed as soon as you would like. Just caution the groomer to be very careful with shampoo & water near her eyes. I would even use some of her eye ointment immediately after her grooming just to make sure nothing has gotten on the eye to cause irritation. One time should be sufficient. Hope this helps . Poor girl. In uncomplicated cases of an eye ulcer the pet normally starts to improve significantly after 7 days. I would have her seen again my your vet soon. The eye ulcer this time around may be deeper or perhaps even resistant to the antibiotic. Sometimes pets also require surgical procedures on the eye to get the ulcer to heal. Ouch! Corneal ulcers hurt. I would recommend taking Rusty into see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Eyes heal quick or get bad quick. The vet will stain the eye to see how bad the ulcer is. They will prescribe drops, pain meds and oral antibiotics most likely. I always like to re-stain corneal ulcers in 48 hours to make sure that they are healing. I like to use an e-collar on the dogs to keep them from scratching at the eye. An infected ulcer can cause serious problems including loss of the eye. You won't know how it is healing just by looking. We used lights, special stain, and small magnifiers to get a really good look at the eye. Blue appearance means that the cornea is swollen. Red in the white part of the eye is inflammation, which is normal. Red in other parts of the eye may not be normal. Definitely keep your appointment on Saturday. Also, if they didn't give you one, I recommend wearing an e-collar, since dogs often will rub their eyes when there is discomfort, and this rubbing can delay healing.

I am sorry to hear about Luna. Unfortunately every corneal ulcer progresses differently and we cannot really predict how rapidly they will heal, particularly without seeing the eye in person as photos of eyes are very difficult to interpret. Normally with corneal ulcers I like to recheck them in a week or earlier if I feel they are bad or the pet seems increasingly uncomfortable. Some ulcers will heal within a week while others take much longer and make require advanced treatments. I would recommend calling your vet to see if Luna should be rechecked and leaving her cone on until your vet has confirmed it is ok to take it off. Best of luck to you and Luna.

If the ulcer doesn't seem to be healing fast enough you should take Spike back to your vet, they should prepare some serum to put in his eye every 2-3 hours (serum is prepared from whole blood, it can be from your dog or from another dog). serum is considered the best non invasive treatment for eye ulcers.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Brian is under Veterinary care and is receiving antibiotic eye drops prescribed by your vet then the ulcer should heal. Most uncomplicated ulcers heal with in 5-7 days. You should recheck with your Vet to be sure it has healed. I do not think cold air caused the ulcer or will make it worse. Dust, running into branches or other plant material may have caused the original injury so I would leash walk him and don't leave him outdoors long unsupervised until the eye has healed.
