Does my dog's healing eye ulcer always need a stain check?

You won't know how it is healing just by looking. We used lights, special stain, and small magnifiers to get a really good look at the eye. Blue appearance means that the cornea is swollen. Red in the white part of the eye is inflammation, which is normal. Red in other parts of the eye may not be normal. Definitely keep your appointment on Saturday. Also, if they didn't give you one, I recommend wearing an e-collar, since dogs often will rub their eyes when there is discomfort, and this rubbing can delay healing.

I do recommend a follow up but if she is no longer squinting and the cornea is clear, not cloudy, and the conjunctiva is not red or swollen then you are fine to finish the medication as directed and monitor her at home for problems. Blue and cloudy discoloration could be due to an inflammation and accumulation of fluid in the anterior chamber of the eye. It is impossible for us to tell whether the eye is improving or not as a physical examination would be needed. After surgery a certain grade of inflammation is expected anyway. I would recommend a check up to make sure there is no deterioration of the corneal indolent ulcer.

I'm glad his corneal ulcer is healing! I would speak to the vet about how best to clean it and what to use on it because it's illegal for the experts at Pet Coach to recommend any drug without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum.

Yes this is totally normal! It can have a mild uveitis (low pressures) after an ulcer while it is still healing. Have your vet recheck the stain and the pressures at your recheck. I hope this helps!

Poor girl. In uncomplicated cases of an eye ulcer the pet normally starts to improve significantly after 7 days. I would have her seen again my your vet soon. The eye ulcer this time around may be deeper or perhaps even resistant to the antibiotic. Sometimes pets also require surgical procedures on the eye to get the ulcer to heal.
