My cat's eye ulcer looks healed. Do I still need a vet follow-up?

Poor Keanu! If he is still squinting then it is likely still bothering him and not completely healed. I would let your vet know. Your vet will likely want to see him again and make sure there isn't a small ulcer left or an eyelash or other issue causing his discomfort. If left untreated, the eye could get worse really quickly. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gizmo! The cloudiness likely just indicated the edema in the cornea. That can go away quickly. Superficial (not deep) corneal ulcers heal in 5-7 days. Since you can still see the ulcer and since it was deep I do not think the ulcer itself is healed yet, just the surrounding cornea. Hello and thank your for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Superficial corneal ulcers are treated with antibiotics eye drops and oral pain killers. These medications are prescription-only, so you need to take your kitten to your local vets to get them.

This lesion seem to be due to a chronic irritation of the cornea, an active corneal ulceration seem not to be present, but only a fluorescein test at your local veterinarian can confirm it (=rule out further corneal damage). The eye looks fairly comfortable anyway. I suspect the conjunctivitis is due to a viral type of infection/inflammation (herpesvirus can be involved). It’s possible that Pepper could have an ulcer or scar tissue associated with the infection. I would have her examined by a vet to see if she needs additional medications and to determine why she is still squinting.

He is right. There is no need to do another stain, if you know where the ulcer was and how severe it was. You can see whether it is healing, or not without a stain. Only sometimes when there are multiple injuries, or scratches on the cornea do we need to repeat a stain. But ulcers are a pretty obvious lesion and easily assessed, so a new stain is not necessary every time. Your vet may want to do another stain once the ulcer appears healed, in order to verify that there is no more defect.
