How do I clean my dog's healing corneal ulcer after surgery?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry for Bella's corneal ulcer, but very glad she is doing well. If, after the final recheck on Friday, her eye still is doing great, then go ahead & have her groomed as soon as you would like. Just caution the groomer to be very careful with shampoo & water near her eyes. I would even use some of her eye ointment immediately after her grooming just to make sure nothing has gotten on the eye to cause irritation. One time should be sufficient. Hope this helps . Eye ulcers are very complex and there is no one size fits all treatment. There are many options for treating ulcers and this is in part depends on the underlying cause of the ulcer (poor tear production/quality, inturned eyelids/eyelashes, scratches from other dogs/cats etc). The cornerstone of treatments are a lubricant drop plus an antibiotic drop (each applied 15mins apart every 2-6hours depending on severity), in many cases serum drops (prepared from the patients blood) are also used to promote healing and prevent further inflammation. Surgical treatment may also be required to clear damaged tissue from the surface of the ulcer and sometimes to protect the eye with flaps/contact lenses etc. I recommend a check up by your vet to ensure the most appropriate treatment is selected

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gizmo! The cloudiness likely just indicated the edema in the cornea. That can go away quickly. Superficial (not deep) corneal ulcers heal in 5-7 days. Since you can still see the ulcer and since it was deep I do not think the ulcer itself is healed yet, just the surrounding cornea. Be sure to follow up as recommended by your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Gizmo a speedy recovery!

Hi there! After I debride these boxer non-healing ulcers I usually start medication that afternoon. While I am not your veterinarian and can’t tell you specifically what they want you to do, in my patients I want the medications started soon. I hope this helps answer your question! Place an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking. Keep the area clean and dry. A dab of a triple antibiotic ointment once or twice daily may help. Monitor for swelling, discharge or discomfort associated with the area. Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian. Since the skin is broken, he is at risk for infection and may need antibiotics. If he is painful, your vet can prescribe or dispense a pain medication also.

You won't know how it is healing just by looking. We used lights, special stain, and small magnifiers to get a really good look at the eye. Blue appearance means that the cornea is swollen. Red in the white part of the eye is inflammation, which is normal. Red in other parts of the eye may not be normal. Definitely keep your appointment on Saturday. Also, if they didn't give you one, I recommend wearing an e-collar, since dogs often will rub their eyes when there is discomfort, and this rubbing can delay healing.

I’m sorry to hear about Sky! There is no over the counter drop/ointment that I am aware of. Reasons the eye may not be healing: 1) If you have not put Sky in an E-collar, do so right away. This is one of the most common reasons they will not heal because the dog will rub and scratch at the eye. Can order online or find at a vet or pet shop. 2) it may not be healing is if Sky has an underlying condition such as dry eye. 3) Sky needs an additional or different medication. 4) we need to increase treatments from twice a day to three or four times a day. Call your vet and let them know what’s going on so they can make a suggestion about what to try next.
