Why is my dog's eye twitching and shut after grooming at Petco?

It sounds like your pet Daisy has a very common situation here which is a chemical burn or scratch on her cornea (surface of her eye). This is common after being groomed because shampoo or condition can get on the eye and isn't washed off properly or promptly. Poor girl. I would recommend taking her to your local vet as soon as you can to get her eye examined, tested and treated. You can rinse the eye with sterile eye solution to get any product out of the eye. If she's still squinting and the cornea is blueish tomorrow morning please take her in for an exam. She may have a scratch on her cornea which is painful and can result in a corneal ulcer. They will stain the eye and can prescribe medication if needed. Since it has not improved, consider an exam with your veterinarian. Kylo may have an infection, corneal injury (scratch or ulcer) or foreign body. Your vet can stain the eye to aid in diagnosing. The tear duct may also be flushed to clear obstruction. Place an e-collar (cone) on Mylo to prevent pawing or rubbing until he sees the doctor.

It is likely that some shampoo, air from the dryer, or even small bits of hair from trimming got in your dog's eye and caused irritation. You can try to rinse your dog's eye gently with saline solution (like you use for contacts). However, there could be a scratch on your dog's eye (the cornea) as well. If it doesn't look better in 24 hours, see your veterinarian for testing to see if there is a scratch on your dog's eye and get appropriate medication.

Based on what you are describing, it definitely sounds like Princess sustained some trauma to her eye from the soap getting into it. If she is squinting her eye, she is definitely painful and should be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Soap can cause superficial corneal ulcers to occur, which can rapidly worsen without treatment, especially if she is continuing to scratch at her eye and traumatize it further. Corneal ulcers, if left untreated, can become deeper and deeper to the point of causing the eye itself to rupture - if this occurs, the eye must be removed. If you have an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) at home, I recommend putting that her Princess right away to keep her from scratching at it. Please have Princess seen by your vet or an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible to start treating her eye. Do NOT give any pain medications that are intended for humans to Princess, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Princess!

Without seeing your dog in person we cannot say for certain, but it is possible that this could be a subconjunctival hemorrage. It can be a result of hypertension (elevated blood pressure), trauma, coagulopathy (blood clotting disorder). Usually this goes away on its own eventually, but if he is acting uncomfortable then a vet visit it best. They can test your dog's blood pressure, and be sure there are no signs of a bleeding disorder, and give pain medication if needed to make him more comfortable.

If Bruno is favoring his eyes by squinting or pawing at them then yes I would be concerned that they may be irritated. The soap could have caused some damage to the cornea or simply just irritated the eye. If you took him to a vet, they could stain his eyes to ensure whether or not there was an ulcer on the eyes and whether he will need antibiotics drops. You could use over the counter artificial tears but I just worry that if there is actual damage to the eyes that they may not heal with just that. I hope he starts to feel better soon.
