My dog's eye is red after grooming. How do I treat the irritation?

  As long as the eye is open and he is not squinting or pawing at the eye, I am not terribly concerned. He may have rubbed the eye, or if he had high anxiety and stress at the groomers, sometimes little blood vessels in the eye can rupture. If he is holding is closed, pawing, or there is discharge, cloudiness, or increasing redness take him to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Eye injuries can become severe very quickly, so please take any changes seriously.

  He could have irritation, scratch/ulcer, or an infection. You could put some artificial tears in his eyes and see if that helps. Otherwise, have your vet take a look at him for treatment. He may need an antibiotic and/ or corticosteroid to help.

  Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she is squinting and there is discharge then I would be concerned about the eye. Squinting is a sign of pain. I recommend taking Betty to the vet so they can look at the eye up close. They may need to put a special drop on the eye to look for a scratch or test the pressure inside the eye. Once they know what’s going on, they can get her medications to improve her comfort level. Good luck and kisses to Betty!

  I would have him seen by a vet today or tomorrow. The squinting makes me worried there could be a scratch on his eye (corneal ulcer) and this needs to be identified and treated with prescription antibiotic ointment as soon as possible. Allergies can cause an eye to be red and have some mucus discharge but generally both eyes are somewhat affected and squinting less likely. In the meantime prevent buddy from pawing at his eye so the irritation doesn't get worse. Hope he s felling better very soon!
