My dog's eye is red and keeps closing. Do I need vet eye drops?

I would recommend taking Princess in for a veterinary exam. Eyes tend to heal quickly or get bad quickly. The one picture looks similar to a scleral hematoma, but the other picture looks like something is going on in the cornea. The cornea can be an emergency situation if there is an ulcer present. The veterinarian will do some diagnostics like an eye stain and prescribe appropriate medications for her. Eye injuries are painful, so she might need pain meds. This does look red and inflamed but may be associated with a cherry eye. Cold compresses, flushing with cooled boiled water and gentle massage of the corner of the eye can help to reduce mild cases but surgical repair is required in persistent cases.

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. Por Jojo! The eye definitely look irritated with a lot of discharge. You can try benadryl twice a day (see link below) and flush it with eye irrigating solution but I am afraid that she will need some prescription eye drops from a vet. If she isn't improved or worsens within 12-24 hours, I would have your vet look at her. I would recommend stopping the drops if Eli's eyes became red after using them. It is possible the eye drops are actually causing irritation to the eyes. I would stop the drops and if you feel like eyes have discharge or the redness does not go away I would recommend taking her to a vet for a close exam! hope that helps

Awww. Poor baby. She looks like they are painful. Their eyes stick out more than a lot of other breeds so they are very susceptible to eye injuries, scratches or even dryness. You could try artificial tears or some other straight saline eye drop. No medications unless prescribed by the veterinarian. Eye problems should be addressed quickly so if she doesn’t improve with just some saline flush or tears have her looked at. They will do a thorough eye exam and stain the eyes to look for any scratches

I am sorry to hear this! His eye does look very irritated- and the area around his eye that has a 'cobblestone' appearance suggests that he has some chronic irritation. I would want to rule out a few things that cause these signs including stray eyelashes that are 'ingrown', eyelid abnormalities, allergies and mites. The good news is that most of these things can be treated successfully! I would bring him in and have a few eye tests done and have them closely examined with magnification (sometimes an ophthalmologist is recommended) and see what kind of treatment plan is needed. Until you can bring him in, over the counter lubricating eye drops may bring some short term relief. I hope this helps!
