Why does my dog have white, mucus-like discharge from both eyes?

Hello and thank you for your questions about Rouge. If the discharge is yellow or green, this often indicates an eye infection. In general, if the discharge continues for longer than 3 days, if she is squinting, if she is pawing or rubbing at the eye or if the eye is very red, she should go to the veterinarian. If the discharge is white, opaque or greyish, it could indicate allergies. You may try a trial of over the counter antihistamine like Benedryl or Zyrtec. Don't use any type of eye drop for allergies for humans in dogs (these often burn) but you can use an artificial tear (like Genteal) 3 times a day to see if it helps. If there is not a change after 7 days, I also recommend to have Rouge examined as she may need testing of her tear glands and maybe stronger medication. Continue to gently clean around the eyes. That is pretty significant discharge that Nola has around her eyes. This is likely secondary to an infection (eye or upper respiratory) or even an allergy. It would be best to have Nola examined by a veterinarian because she may need medicated eye drops or even an oral antibiotic to treat the eyes. It's always better to have a dog seen if there are eye issues going on as it can progress to more serious issues quickly. You may use a sterile saline solution to rinse Nola's eyes but I don't think that will resolve the issue. So again, it's really the best idea to have Nola evaluated by your veterinarian. A little mucousy discharge is not alarming. It is also not a sign of worms. If the mucus starts looking like pus or if she starts squinting her eyes or if the conjunctives turn red, then you should take her to your veterinarian for an eye exam. However if she gets a little mucousy eye discharge once in a while without those signs, it is nothing to worry about.

Hi. I would be thinking allergies in her case. It can cause redness, itching, secondary infections, even crusts in the area. Pets can be allergic to the protein in their food, environmental allergens, or a combination of the two. When they are younger like Rey, i would lean more towards food allergies. They are usually allergic to the chicken, beef or lamb....the most common ingredients in most over the counter dog foods. I would make an appointmet to get her checked out and get her on medications for secondary infection and itchiness. And also discuss food allergies with your veterinarian.

Hi there and thank you for posting your question! Eye discharge can be caused from many things. Allergies, dry eye, eye trauma, infection, foreign material, etc. It sounds like the eyes have been improving, so this may have been more of an allergy or irritation than anything. If the discharge continues, I would have your vet take a look at Izzy to determine what the cause is. Your vet will likely stain the eye and do a tear test to determine if there is eye trauma or dry eye present. Dry eye would require a more specific treatment and won't improve with over the counter eye drops. If it is allergies, a great allergy eye drop you can safely use in dogs is called Zaditor (Ketotifen Fumarate). You can administer 1-2 drops in both eyes twice daily to see if that helps with the eye discharge. Again, if the eyes are not improving or worsening, then I would have Izzy seen by her vet. The white and yellow goo is just normal secretions from the glands surrounding the eyelid and are not overly concerning to me. I agree that the eye doesn't seem very swollen or red. Overall, this condition is mild and indicates that there is inflammation of the eye and/or conjunctiva (the pink/red tissue surrounding the eye). I usually see these cases of mild inflammation when something has scratched the surface of the eye or something like dirt or grass gets inside the eyelid. Given this, I think the saline flush and warm compress are both good things to do right now. Flush the eye with saline for one minute and try to flush inside the eyelid. Dogs (especially Malinois) usually hate this, so you're going to need some help. I recommend having one person get a good hold of Koda's body, while the other person holds the head and flushes the eye. Repeat the flush twice a day as needed. The flush time can be reduced to 20 seconds if the eye is showing signs of improvement. You can continue the warm compress three times a day. This should heal within a week. If it gets worse or does not get better after a week, then she should go to the vet, because there may be an infection.

The discharge you are seeing may also be due to dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and could also be an allergy. I would recommend having Tibo examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having a Schirmer Tear Test done to rule out dry eye as a cause. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
