Dog's eye looks pink after haircut. Is it an emergency or can I treat it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The pictures of Ziggy's eyes are hard to say for sure, but it appears what you are seeing is his third eyelid. It can become visible for a number of reasons, the most common of which in a dog his age include lymphoid hyperplasia (a condition that is self-limiting and rarely requires intervention), ocular foreign body which is usually irritating and makes them rub at it and squint, and a local allergic reaction to something in his environment. Keep watch on this, and if it does start bothering him, gets larger, or fails to subside within a week or two, please have him examined by a veterinarian. Hope this helps!

It sounds like your pet Daisy has a very common situation here which is a chemical burn or scratch on her cornea (surface of her eye). This is common after being groomed because shampoo or condition can get on the eye and isn't washed off properly or promptly. Poor girl. I would recommend taking her to your local vet as soon as you can to get her eye examined, tested and treated. I would want to look a bit closer to be sure, but this looks normal to me. The pink skin around the eye tends to be more prominent in the areas of white fur. If you are adopting from a shelter, then they usually have a veterinarian on staff. You can ask for the vet to just check the eye before you adopt, so that you can be certain that nothing is wrong with it. I hope that helps and all is well with Bru.

If Niko is squinting the eye or if there is excessive discharge from the eye he needs to see a vet right away. If he is not squinting, then you can use this ophthalmic gel if you'd like. If it doesn't seem better in a few days then you can get him to the vet for an exam. ( )

It is likely that some shampoo, air from the dryer, or even small bits of hair from trimming got in your dog's eye and caused irritation. You can try to rinse your dog's eye gently with saline solution (like you use for contacts). However, there could be a scratch on your dog's eye (the cornea) as well. If it doesn't look better in 24 hours, see your veterinarian for testing to see if there is a scratch on your dog's eye and get appropriate medication.
