My dog has eye mucus that looks like fur. Is it hair stuck in his eye?

That is just a little eye discharge from her eye. She doesn't look like she is favoring that eye or anything. It is likely fine now that you removed the hair but just watch for any squinting or any green or yellow discharge. If noted, I would have your vet take a look at it to ensure she doesn't have an infection or a laceration/ulcer on her eye. I hope this helps!

To get fur out of the eye you can use saline solution, which is usually available at a store or pharmacy near the contact lens solution. You can gently flush the eye and massage the eyelids to try and clear the fur. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

That looks like it could be a string of the normal eye discharge, an actual cloth string or (less common in the United States) a worm. Use some sterile ophthalmic saline and put in 3-4 drops in her eye. Gently rub on the upper eye lid to try to dislodge the discharge. Try to wipe it out with a clean, dry cotton ball. If you cannot dislodge this object, have Lucy examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

HI, thanks for using PetCoach! Most cats and dogs that get thick mucous or a hair stuck on their eye are just fine. They eventually are able to blink enough to get the hair off the eye. These animals do not even notice it meaning the eye is open and not red. If Oliver is keeping his eye closed and seems painful then he needs to see a Vet. It could be something stuck irritating the eye or he could have a scratch on his eye, uveitis or glaucoma. That would be extremely rare to have to put a dog down because of an eye infection. See what happens now that you cleaned the mucous away. If it comes back than you should have your vet take a look at him to determine if medication is needed. He may need an antibiotic to treat an infection. So sorry about your other dog. That is sad.

Sorry to hear that Mushy's been going through this. I am sure it is getting frustrating. Chronic tearing is not a very common condition. If it hasn't been done yet, make sure the next vet you see performs a Schirmer Tear Test to determine how much tears are being produced. They will be able to quantify overproduction if this is the case. If over production of the tears is present and the surgery of ingrown hair removal was not successful in resolving the issue, you may also want to consider visiting with a veterinary ophthalmologist. A little mucousy discharge is not alarming. It is also not a sign of worms. If the mucus starts looking like pus or if she starts squinting her eyes or if the conjunctives turn red, then you should take her to your veterinarian for an eye exam. However if she gets a little mucousy eye discharge once in a while without those signs, it is nothing to worry about.
