Dog's eyes always wet with grey mucus and bad smell. What to do?

Ouch! Meeka needs to be examined by the veterinarian. She likely has an eye infection and something like a corneal abrasion or even 'dry eye' is possible. Have her examined today and protect the eye from any rubbing (she may need to wear an elizabethan collar at all times). I hope she feels better quickly.

This is actually more of a type of mucous secreted by the eyelid and not pus. It does look like it's a bit too much though and if it has been six months, then it has not been treated effectively and it's best to have a vet diagnose the exact problem. The eye doesn't look very bad from the picture, but it's difficult to say without examining it in-person. I suspect that it's a mild to moderate irritation that's causing this. It could be due to allergies, or a deformity of the eye, or eyelid that's causing irritation. It could also be due to a lack of tear production. A vet will easily be able to tell if these are the problems. I hope that helps and Chelsea gets better soon.

Hi there! Excessive tearing of the eyes can be due to a number of things, including spring allergies (dust, grasses, pollens), eye irritants, or eye injuries/infections (these usually come with green, yellow, or cloudy discharge, rather than clear mucus). If you suspect allergies or irritation, you can try an over the counter medication such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to see if it helps reduce symptoms. However, if the eye discharge continues, worsens, becomes bothersome to Bella, or becomes cloudy or discolored, it's best to have your vet take a look in person. I would also stop the eye washes for a while and just gently clean any debris or mucus away with a warm, clean washcloth to see if that helps reduce irritation and tear production as the washes may just be exacerbating the issue.

It's not possible to know what's causing this without doing a full eye exam, but I'm suspicious of an eye infection, or conjunctivitis. I can't see the grey dots, but this is likely due to some degree of damage to the outside of the eye. Conjunctivitis can be caused by a few different infections, or dust and debris in the eye. This appears to be moderate to severe case, so I recommend taking Moxie to the vet sometime in the next 24 hours. They will be able to better inspect the eye and provide the most appropriate treatment. For now, you can flush the eye 3-4 times a day with saline (can get this at the supermarket or pharmacy in the eye care section) to help clean and soothe it. Depending on the breed and eye conformation, some dogs will have tears that spill over the inside corner of the eye instead of draining down the tear ducts as they should. If this has been a life-long problem for Ziggy, then it may be due to his body conformation. However, there are some skin complications that can come from the crusting on the fur and some treatments that can either improve the eye draining or help prevent skin problems from the fur crusting, so I do think it would be worth having your vet examine Ziggy Stardust to see if there is anything you can do about this situation. This is a sign of conjunctivitis. It may have developed from allergies or an eye irritant like smoke or pollen. You can wipe the discharge from the eyes with a warm wet cloth, and use sterile eye drops to flush out the discharge. Since the discharge is pussy Pepper has an infection that would clear up more quickly with prescription eye ointment. I recommend an exam with your veterinarian. They will examine the eyes and may stain them to check for a corneal injury and also will check to see if Pepper has normal tear production. Dogs with dry eyes can be more prone to conjunctivitis. She could have a problem with her tear duct, allergies, or it might be that she has a hair, eyelash or something causing irritation. Since this is a chronic problem, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can prescribe an anti-histamine, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or other medications, if needed.
