My dog has excessive eye discharge. Is it a sign of worms or illness?

Unfortunately, I can't tell from the photo. It looks like Neige has a lot of discharge in the eye and this is concerning for an infection. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian to check out a possible eye infection and to look for any worms. I hope this helps.

Poor girl. White discharge from the eyes can indicate either a dry eye conditon or the beginning of an allergic conjunctivitis (allergies causing inflammation of the eyes). If she is also sneezing and rubbing her eyes from irritation, then chances are she has allergic conjunctivitis. You can discuss with your vet about trying some over the counter or vet prescribed antihistamine medication to try and help with this. Your vet may want to examine her first just to make sure we are on the right track with her diagnosis and treatment recommendations. In the meantime I would continue to apply warm compresses on her eyelids (while holding them closed) and Henry cleansing the discharge as needed to prevent irritation around her eyes. Hello there! Sometimes puppies have a type of eye infection that can cause mucus to form in the eyes. Or, sometimes they don't have adequate tears, and the eyes respond with mucus instead. Ideally, it would be a great idea to have the eyes checked by your vet.

That looks like it could be a string of the normal eye discharge, an actual cloth string or (less common in the United States) a worm. Use some sterile ophthalmic saline and put in 3-4 drops in her eye. Gently rub on the upper eye lid to try to dislodge the discharge. Try to wipe it out with a clean, dry cotton ball. If you cannot dislodge this object, have Lucy examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buttercup. It is difficult to say without seeing a picture, but a lot of small breed dogs will experience epiphora or clear tearing of the eyes. As along as it is clear, the eye is not red and the dog is not squinting, it is generally not an issue. However, if it is new and only one eye, you will want to have her evaluated by her veterinarian. She can have an eyelash contacting the surface of her eye causing irritation. Moo is adorable, but his eyes certainly seem uncomfortable given his squinting! Squinting is a sign of eye pain in dogs. Coupled with the yellow/green discharge, it is concerning that he may have an eye infection, corneal ulcer or uveitis (inflammation within the eyes). Allergies may be contributing, but the yellow/green discharge makes me suspicious that there is another issue present. If his eyes are itchy at all, make sure that Moo wears an e-collar (cone) until you can take him to the vet today or tomorrow to prevent further eye injury. I hope that all goes well!

A bit of serous or clear discharge is not uncommon in dogs to some extent. However, if that discharge becomes mucopurulent (yellowish/greenish) it could mean a number of possible conditions that do need therapy such as a corneal ulcer secondary to perhaps trauma while camping, or other conditions such as KCS. If she appears to have that type of discharge, have her evaluated by your veterinarian to ensure that she is ok and does not require any therapy. Good luck with Koda!!
