My dog's eye won't open, has discharge after chlorine. Vet needed?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. It sounds like his eye is sore between him keeping it closed and the discharge accumulating on it. He will need to see his veterinarian as he could have a scratch across the surface of the eye. This is tested for by placing a drop of dye on the surface of his eye. Based on the results, his veterinarian will likely prescribe an eye medication. In the meantime, keep the eye clear of any discharge and do not allow him to alpaw at it. That is pretty significant discharge that Nola has around her eyes. This is likely secondary to an infection (eye or upper respiratory) or even an allergy. It would be best to have Nola examined by a veterinarian because she may need medicated eye drops or even an oral antibiotic to treat the eyes. It's always better to have a dog seen if there are eye issues going on as it can progress to more serious issues quickly. You may use a sterile saline solution to rinse Nola's eyes but I don't think that will resolve the issue. So again, it's really the best idea to have Nola evaluated by your veterinarian. It sounds like your pet Daisy has a very common situation here which is a chemical burn or scratch on her cornea (surface of her eye). This is common after being groomed because shampoo or condition can get on the eye and isn't washed off properly or promptly. Poor girl. I would recommend taking her to your local vet as soon as you can to get her eye examined, tested and treated. Most pets with this condition recovery fully within 7 days time, as long as they receive treatment quickly. I hope that your pet Daisy resolves her eye issue soon! Best of luck and take care.

If you rinsed her eye out and it didn't help then she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She could have a corneal ulcer/scratch, infection, foreign material in her eye, etc. Your vet can stain her eye to determine if there is an ulcer or scratch and then prescribe medications to help treat. She may need an antibiotic and/or an anti-inflammatory to help treat the problem.

Squinting the eye abnormally could be caused by pain which could be caused by a variety of conditions, including allergies, bacterial or viral infection, corneal abrasion or ulcer, or something stuck under the eyelids. The discharge you described could occur with any of these conditions. I would recommend that you have Bella examined by a vet since eyes can go downhill very quickly. The vet will do a thorough exam and may need to do one or two tests to determine what is going on so they can select an appropriate treatment.

I would have to examine the eye in-person, but it appears that Nala has corneal edema causing the cloudiness. This happens with trauma to the eye and infections. It is not a permanent change, but if there is enough damage it can form a scar. It's best to have Nala rechecked by your vet. They can stain the eye and look for any evidence of ulceration, or infection. I hope that helps and Nala gets better soon.
