My dog's eyes bled after cleaning eye discharge. What should I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Uno. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She could have an eye infection and the draining causing an irritation to the underlying skin near her eye. If this is not the case, then the skin near here her eyelid could be the problem. There are certain skin diseases that tend to affect the eyelid margins. Her veterinarian will examine her and determine the best course of treatment to resolve the issue. So the first question is why is there discharge. A dog as large as Samson should not have eye discharge normally and needs to see a vet as I am very worried about an eye ulcer.

If the dog in question is a small/toy breed then clear discharge with large crusty buildup is common.

Either way, the mantra is SOAK SOAK SOAK. Use plenty of warm water or saline until the stuff is thin enough to gently wipe off. Avoid any scrubbing or picking motions. Sometimes, these guys do also need a topical medication if the infection underneath is severe.

Why does my dog have a bloody blister and discharge in his eye?

From your description, this could be something called a cherry eye (prolapsed tear gland), or could be a localized infection or injury to the eye or conjunctiva in this area. Since you are also seeing bloody discharge from the eye, I would recommend having Gus seen by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can examine the eye to determine the problem. If he has a cherry eye, it will need to be surgically corrected. If he has an injury or an infection, he will need prescription eye drops to treat it.

Squinting the eye abnormally could be caused by pain which could be caused by a variety of conditions, including allergies, bacterial or viral infection, corneal abrasion or ulcer, or something stuck under the eyelids. The discharge you described could occur with any of these conditions. I would recommend that you have Bella examined by a vet since eyes can go downhill very quickly. The vet will do a thorough exam and may need to do one or two tests to determine what is going on so they can select an appropriate treatment.

My dog has a puffy, bleeding eyelid in one eye. What's the cause?

Vincent is very handsome! It is hard to say by the pictures but it looks like he has an infection around his eye. I recommend taking him to a vet so they can get a closer look. They may want to stain the globe to make sure he hasn't scratched the cornea then they can get him on a medication to heal the area. Good luck and kisses to Vincent!

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Toots's ( I love that name! ) area around her eye looks very red, inflamed, and painful. The gunk you pulled away might have been eye discharge. This definitely warrants a veterinary exam very soon. Dry eye, corneal irritation or ulcer, bacterial infection, or trauma to the eye are all potential causes among others. I would recommend Toots see her veterinarian for exam eye and a few eye tests so a diagnosis can be made and Toots's eye can get treated. Thank you submitting your question regarding Missy. Yes, it is likely that she has a cherry eye based on your photo. She could have an infection with it and even altered tear productio causing the discharge. She will need to see her veterinarian especially as it sounds like she is not feeling well.
