When can my dog get a dry eye test after corneal ulcer eye drops?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry for Bella's corneal ulcer, but very glad she is doing well. If, after the final recheck on Friday, her eye still is doing great, then go ahead & have her groomed as soon as you would like. Just caution the groomer to be very careful with shampoo & water near her eyes. I would even use some of her eye ointment immediately after her grooming just to make sure nothing has gotten on the eye to cause irritation. One time should be sufficient. Hope this helps . Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The BNP could cause a falsely higher than normal tear reading. It would be best to measure her tears after the ulcer has healed and she is off the ointment. Also the eye makes more tears when it is painful. Allergies can cause itchy eyes and discharge. I am sure your Vet will get to the bottom line and will get Bella back to normal! Good luck!

I am sorry to hear about Luna. Unfortunately every corneal ulcer progresses differently and we cannot really predict how rapidly they will heal, particularly without seeing the eye in person as photos of eyes are very difficult to interpret. Normally with corneal ulcers I like to recheck them in a week or earlier if I feel they are bad or the pet seems increasingly uncomfortable. Some ulcers will heal within a week while others take much longer and make require advanced treatments. I would recommend calling your vet to see if Luna should be rechecked and leaving her cone on until your vet has confirmed it is ok to take it off. Best of luck to you and Luna.

Poor girl. In uncomplicated cases of an eye ulcer the pet normally starts to improve significantly after 7 days. I would have her seen again my your vet soon. The eye ulcer this time around may be deeper or perhaps even resistant to the antibiotic. Sometimes pets also require surgical procedures on the eye to get the ulcer to heal. Hi there! After I debride these boxer non-healing ulcers I usually start medication that afternoon. While I am not your veterinarian and can’t tell you specifically what they want you to do, in my patients I want the medications started soon. I hope this helps answer your question! Eye ulcers are very complex and there is no one size fits all treatment. There are many options for treating ulcers and this is in part depends on the underlying cause of the ulcer (poor tear production/quality, inturned eyelids/eyelashes, scratches from other dogs/cats etc). The cornerstone of treatments are a lubricant drop plus an antibiotic drop (each applied 15mins apart every 2-6hours depending on severity), in many cases serum drops (prepared from the patients blood) are also used to promote healing and prevent further inflammation. Surgical treatment may also be required to clear damaged tissue from the surface of the ulcer and sometimes to protect the eye with flaps/contact lenses etc. I recommend a check up by your vet to ensure the most appropriate treatment is selected

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gizmo! The cloudiness likely just indicated the edema in the cornea. That can go away quickly. Superficial (not deep) corneal ulcers heal in 5-7 days. Since you can still see the ulcer and since it was deep I do not think the ulcer itself is healed yet, just the surrounding cornea.
