Dog eye discharge: Can ointment affect tear test or is it allergies?

Dry eye can result in the discharge in the picture you posted and can require more than just Artificial Tears to treat. (That would be more common than an allergy problem especially since only one eye is affected.) If your pet Batman has eye discharge that is yellow/green then that is a sign of conjunctivitis which can be caused by an environmental allergy but it is more likely caused by a scratch/ulcer on the eye itself and not allergy related at all. I would recommend taking him in to your vet to get the eye examined. He will likely need to be placed on a topical eye antibiotic ointment to get this to heal well. Squinting the eye abnormally could be caused by pain which could be caused by a variety of conditions, including allergies, bacterial or viral infection, corneal abrasion or ulcer, or something stuck under the eyelids. The discharge you described could occur with any of these conditions. I would recommend that you have Bella examined by a vet since eyes can go downhill very quickly. The vet will do a thorough exam and may need to do one or two tests to determine what is going on so they can select an appropriate treatment.

Excessive tearing of the eyes can be due to a number of things, including spring allergies (dust, grasses, pollens), eye irritants, or eye injuries/infections (these usually come with green, yellow, or cloudy discharge, rather than clear mucus). If you suspect allergies or irritation, you can try an over the counter medication such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to see if it helps reduce symptoms. However, if the eye discharge continues, worsens, becomes bothersome to Bella, or becomes cloudy or discolored, it's best to have your vet take a look in person. I would also stop the eye washes for a while and just gently clean any debris or mucus away with a warm, clean washcloth to see if that helps reduce irritation and tear production as the washes may just be exacerbating the issue.

I'd recommend contacting your veterinarian to discuss what other tests might be recommended. It may be that Bella has a resistant infection, allergy or autoimmune disease. If your vet isn't sure about the next step you could also ask about referral to an ophthalmologist who would be able to do a thorough evaluation. I would recommend stopping any home remedies as many essential oils can harm the sensitive eye.

There are over the counter eye drops that work well in eye allergy cases or a steroid drop from your vet.
