My dog has diarrhea and sunken eyes after spay. Is this normal?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. I do recommend that she sees a veterinarian today. Her incision appears to be healing well. I do not see redness, swelling or discharge draining out. However, pictures can be deceiving. I am more worried that she is not eating. The diarrhea needs to be addressed as well. The veterinarian will examine her and take her temperature. A fever, for example, can indicate an infection. If you stopped her medications, which is reasonable given the diarrhea, she may be very painful now though. This too can affect appetite. The veterinarian will guide you on any testing or treatment options. In the meantime, keep her quiet, encourage her to drink so she doesn't become dehydrated and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. Poor Bailey. The diarrhea could be present for many reasons and it could be related to a vaccine reaction. Parasites, bacteria overgrowth, a change in diet or something more sinister like parvo are also possible. I recommend to play it safe and have Bailey examined today by the veterinarian. I would take Snowball back to your vet, since it's been going on for three days and hasn't resolved with a bland diet. They will likely prescribe medication for the diarrhea so that it will clear up more quickly.

Congratulations on adding Bailey to your family! With all things considered: being post-op, developing a cough and not eating well....I think having her seen would be a good idea. Since she can't talk and tell you how she feels, it's best to be safe. The doctor will check her over for any signs of complication from the surgery, make sure she doesn't look dehydrated and give her a general once over. I hope she's on the path to recovery quickly! At home you may try feeding her a boiled chicken breast and boiled white rice with extra warm water added. This may help to encourage her appetite until she is feeling better. The incision looks normal. Her behavior is not. I recommend a recheck exam. She could be painful or could have a urinary infection. If the doxycycline is causing a stomach upset they may be able to switch antibiotics. They can put her on pain medication also to make her more comfortable. I recommend feeding wet food with added water in it so she doesn't get dehydrated. Again most dogs are back to normal in a day or two after the surgery so please bring her in for a recheck to make sure there is no complication. Poor Bailey! Withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. The surgical site looks fabulous, no evidence of any sort of reaction, inflammation, or infection in that area. Based on those pictures, if Miracle is still having issues I do not believe the surgical incision is responsible for it. Once bout of diarrhea is not really something to read into unless it is followed up by a few more. I would keep a close eye on her behaviors and demeanor. If she continues to be out of sorts or has a spike in any inappropriate symptom, get her into the vet that performed the surgery for a follow-up visit. Things you can do at home to assess health would include taking Miracle's rectal temperature (anything over 102.5 is considered a fever), pulling up on some of the skin to see if it quickly returns to the body to check for hydration, and checking the pinkness / moistness of the gum lining. This is a indicator of perfusion and hydration. Hope this all makes sense.
