Dog spay incision red, diarrhea, and lethargic after pyometra surgery?

You Hello my 11yr old bitch has just had an ovariohysterectemy for a pyometra infection, that was on Tuesday it’s now Saturday and there’s been some reddening of the wound (I have pictures) she had a bout of diarrhoea the once last night and seems a bit down Now

The surgical site looks fabulous, no evidence of any sort of reaction, inflammation, or infection in that area. Based on those pictures, if Miracle is still having issues I do not believe the surgical incision is responsible for it. Once bout of diarrhea is not really something to read into unless it is followed up by a few more. I would keep a close eye on her behaviors and demeanor. If she continues to be out of sorts or has a spike in any inappropriate symptom, get her into the vet that performed the surgery for a follow-up visit. Things you can do at home to assess health would include taking Miracle's rectal temperature (anything over 102.5 is considered a fever), pulling up on some of the skin to see if it quickly returns to the body to check for hydration, and checking the pinkness / moistness of the gum lining. This is a indicator of perfusion and hydration. Hope this all makes sense.

I do not see redness, swelling or discharge draining out. However, pictures can be deceiving. I am more worried that she is not eating. The diarrhea needs to be addressed as well. The veterinarian will examine her and take her temperature. A fever, for example, can indicate an infection. If you stopped her medications, which is reasonable given the diarrhea, she may be very painful now though. This too can affect appetite. The veterinarian will guide you on any testing or treatment options. In the meantime, keep her quiet, encourage her to drink so she doesn't become dehydrated and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. My dog has pain, swollen belly, discharge after pyometra surgery?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Daria. If she is not acting normal, this is worrisome. She should not be getting more painful this many days out from surgery. It is worth having her rechecked by a veterinarian. In the meantime, keep the incision clean and dry. Do not allow her to lick it. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

My dog's spay incision is bleeding 3 days after, should I worry?

The site itself looks good. No swelling, redness or bruising and it appears closed. The slight discharge does not appear to be frank blood. It looks like it may be fluid from a seroma. Seromas can occur after surgery. Continue to monitor the site, If the discharge increases or has a bad odor then see your veterinarian. Monitor Delilah for lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. These are symptoms that should also be addressed by your vet. Keep an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking or chewing of the site. You can use a diluted betadine or Hibiclens solution around the site to keep the area clean.

My dog is lethargic and not peeing after spay surgery. Is this normal?

The incision looks normal. Her behavior is not. I recommend a recheck exam. She could be painful or could have a urinary infection. If the doxycycline is causing a stomach upset they may be able to switch antibiotics. They can put her on pain medication also to make her more comfortable. I recommend feeding wet food with added water in it so she doesn't get dehydrated. Again most dogs are back to normal in a day or two after the surgery so please bring her in for a recheck to make sure there is no complication. My dog's spay incision is swollen and red. Is this normal healing?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The incision looks inflammed, but this could be part of the normal healing process. If there is any discharge, OR if the wound looked better than this previously and is now looking MORE red than say Friday or Saturday, I would take her back to the vet right away. If it is steadily looking better, and she is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing normally, then you can continue to monitor it. Best of luck with Lilo.

My dog's spay incision is red and she's not eating. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lena needs to have an examination by a veterinarian as soon as you can to ensure the incision remains closed. In the picture, it appears there is some inflammation next to the incision. This is likely due to irritation to the area, and she may be licking at the incision and making the inflammation worst. If she is licking it, it could even cause infection or make an existing infection worse. I would recommend an Elizabethan collar to be fitted on Lena to make sure she is not able to lick the area until fully healed. The lack of appetite is very concerning which makes her case in more urgent need of attention by a veterinarian. It may be nothing serious yet, but it is better to get on top of these things early to keep them from becoming a larger issue. Hope this helps and that Lena gets better!

My dog's spay incision looks red and swollen. Is it infected?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Panda's spay incision does appear to be red and a little swollen. Swelling at a spay site can be due to a variety of reasons, including infection, inflammation from a reaction to the suture material, or over-activity after her procedure, among others. I would recommend Panda be seen by her regular veterinarian to have the swelling evaluated, and start any medications (antibiotic, anti-inflammatory) that she may need. In the meantime, I would recommend icing the area as well. Good luck!
