My new puppy has diarrhea and won't eat after her first shots.

Baily is so cute! I am concerned though that he is not eating and having such intestinal upset. I would recommend you take Baily in for an exam with your vet as soon as possible. Puppies this young can get dehydrated very quickly and become quite ill. I am worried about the possibility of intestinal parasites, eating something he shouldn't have (dietary indiscretion), or even a bacterial or viral infection (like parvovirus). Baily may need some tests to see what the underlying cause is, such as a parvo test and fecal test. He also may need some anti-nausea medication, antibiotics, or even fluid therapy if he is dehydrated. I hope he gets back on track quickly!

It could be a reaction. A dog can have vaccine reactions at any point in life. Reactions usually occur within 24-48 hours after vaccination. For the diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours then feed a bland diet (plain, boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If t doesn't resolve, see your veterinarian. In the future, separate the vaccines to determine which vaccine caused the reaction. Your veterinarian can pretreat with an antihistamine to avoid reactions. Call your veterinarian and report the possible reaction.

Either one of these things can result in diarrhea. At less than eight weeks, Buttons really should not even be receiving a vaccine as of yet, as that is the age when it is licensed at a minimum. Dietary change should always be done over a gradual period, approximately one week. Diarrhea can also be called by GI parasites in puppies this young. I would bring in a fecal sample to your veterinarian to be looked at to verify if any of this is occurring. If so, a dewormer can be administered and rid Buttons of the nasty bugs. Regarding vaccination, if you are concerned about reactions to the shots just make sure that Buttons is never receiving more than one or two at a time. With larger dogs, I don't hesitate to do up to four at any given time, but with a tiny pup I won't give more than two. Hope this helps.

Poor Bailey! That is very concerning and I don't think it is something that can be treated without some veterinary care. Please call your vet and have him examined and treated asap, especially since the vomiting and diarrhea is bad and he is shaking. He may be getting dehydrated and in need of fluids. He could have a parasite or an infection and your vet can run lab-work to help determine the cause and then recommend a treatment plan. Hope he feels better soon!

If a dog is going to suffer a vaccine reaction, it typically occurs the same day as the vaccination. So this is likely unrelated. He may be experiencing GI upset secondary to all the new treats. I would stop those for now. Being so young and small, he should see his veterinarian if symptoms persist. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink small amounts. Your pups are so cute! Diarrhea and reduced appetite could be caused by parasites, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Parvovirus is also a possibility, particularly in a dog as young as Rocky, as you mentioned he is too young to have had all his boosters yet. Please make an appointment to have Rocky seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as diarrhea can easily lead to dehydration in such a young pup, and can be very dangerous if left untreated. In the mean time, if he is not eating well, you can try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding her small amounts of the resulting chicken broth and cooked chicken with boiled plain white rice once it has cooled.
