My dog collapsed, limp, panting, then staggered. What happened?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered

Yesterday my male pitbull came in and fell out on his side panting real heavy and fast giving a high pitched occasional bark. I tried to get him up but his whole body was limp. After about 30 minutes he got up but staggered around and couldn't get his legs to function right. After several hours he was back to normal.. Any idea

That sounds scary! Zeus needs to be examined by his veterinarian today if possible. It sounds like he may have had a seizure or a syncopal episode. Pets can have seizures for many reasons including liver disease, electrolyte imbalance, infections, inner ear problems, cancer or epilepsy. Syncopal episodes are generally related to the heart. He will need a physical exam and bloodwork to begin to narrow down and appropriately address the cause. Seizures are serious and are best addressed early. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
