My dog suddenly collapsed, was stiff, then recovered. What happened?

It sounds like Ingmar could have a serious health issue related to heart disease, seizures, or toxin exposure. I strongly recommend you have him examined by a veterinarian right away as some of these issues can be life threatening. Your veterinarian can assess Ingmar for a heart murmur and take X-rays to determine if emergency heart medication is needed. If seizures are suspected, then medication may be needed to prevent them in the future. Blood work should also be done to ensure no organ issues are present. Sounds like he may have lost his footing and then knocked himself cold (similar to when athletes get the wind knocked out of them after being hit) . Or he may have even had a brief episode of syncope (brief passing out episode due to an underlying heart condition). A silent seizure is also a possibility here. I would monitor him for now if he seems to have fully recovered and record any future events so that you can show your vet and get clarification on what may have caused this. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like a seizure. I would recommend video taping an episode and showing your Vet. Causes of seizures depend on age. In dogs 1-5 epilepsy is the most common cause. In puppies: toxins, infectious or congenital problems and older than 6 years of age we worry about organ failures and brain tumors. One to 2 episodes a month may warrant starting medications. I would recommend full blood work with urine, thyroid testing if older than 6 and tick testing. If all that is normal then consider starting medications. i wish Bella the best!

I'm concerned that Gilby's issue may be more related to a possible heart condition or other health problem rather than being caused by the collision with the lab. It sounds like he may have been having a series of syncopal episodes. Its also possible that this was seizure activity that you were seeing. Take Gilby to your vet to be evaluated. If he's still doing fine its not super urgent.... you don't need to rush to an ER... however, make an appointment if at all possible in the next couple of days. What you are describing sounds like it may be seizure. This can happen at any age from getting into something or having a change in their nervous system or brain. At her age, it is safest to have her checked by a vet to make sure there are metabolic reasons this was started. If it is a seizure then there is medicine they can start to help prevent further ones and control it

There are many causes and the heart could be the problem. If Bailey has a congenital heart problem, this most certainly could have lead to this. Walking Bailey may have over-exerted him, especially if he has a heart problem. I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Bailey so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The sooner he is seen the better! I'm sorry to hear Joe is having an issue! Certainly must have been scary for you and him! It's impossible to say what caused this in Joe, but I'm concerned that this could have been a seizure. I'd strongly recommend taking Joe to see a veterinarian right away as seizures can be caused by a number of things including toxin exposure.
