My dog suddenly collapsed, was stiff, then recovered. What happened?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My 8 year old beagle all of a sudden got up from her dog bed, and collapsed. She could not walk. I lay her on a rug. She was all stiff and could not walk. She did not shake or pee or poop. After 5 minutes she was able to walk outside and did a huge poop. This has happened once before. She seems fine now.

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with your pet. There are any number of medical reasons that might explain this, but the most likely would be a seizure (not all are classic grand mal), or a heart issue. The best way to determine the cause is to let your veterinarian do a full exam & blood work to rule out any metabolic or otherwise obvious reasons for the episode. Then, if any treatments or medications are indicated, your veterinarian can discuss all options with you. Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
