Why is my dog suddenly trembling, limping, and not drinking water?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 55 lbs

My dog out of no where started trembling would not walk or move when his name was called. Not even to come get food. He has eaten but will not drink water. Have checked all over for any bites, wounds, swelling, or ticks. We don't not see anything. He is not whimpering when you touch him anywhere but is limping on his front right leg. He was fine and acting himself just this morning but at dinner time this all started. Help not sure what's wrong.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Based on the symptoms you are describing, I would recommend having Zeus examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. He may be in pain from a leg injury causing him to not want to move much and also could be affecting his appetite / thirst. Another possibility is that Zeus is currently dealing with Tick Paralysis. There are also other possible causes but these are just a couple. I would get him in sooner rather than later and if that means taking him in as an emergency, I would certainly do so. Poor Zeus! It sounds like he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He could have an infections, parasite, metabolic/endocrine disease, musculoskeletal pain, etc. and your vet can run lab-work and take x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat his problem. Poor Zeus! The shaking can be a sign of pain, which would cause him to not eat or drink. He could be in pain from an injury, such as a torn ligament or muscle, or he could be in pain from an illness or infection. If he had a foreign body stuck in his GI tract, for example, that would be painful and cause him to not want to eat or drink. I think it would be a good idea to take him into your vet today for an exam given how quickly his symptoms appeared. Your vet can determine what has caused him to have these symptoms, and how best to treat it.

Why is my dog whining and limping, shifting pain in his legs?

I recommend to have Zeus examined today. Shifting leg lameness can indicate a few conditions like Lyme disease, panosteitis or an autoimmune condition. My dog can't stand, is disoriented, and throwing up. What's wrong?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm so sorry to hear Zeus is unwell. If he is unable to stand, this may be a sign of an injury such as a fractured bone, or it could be neurological, such as a slipped disc in his spine or a head injury. Was there any trauma that occurred shortly before these symptoms appeared? In any case, this sounds serious and I would get him seen at a vet right away. In the meantime, try to protect him from injuring himself by giving him a soft bed to lie on and padding around him, and provide his food and water close by. I hope this helps, and that Zeus gets the help he needs soon!

Loss of appetite and vomiting can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Lameness can be due to discomfort possibly due to arthritis or something else. This may be related or perhaps may be unrelated and another issue. Lyme disease is a possibility though this is not very common. I recommend that you have Jakey evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. My dog collapsed, limp, panting, then staggered. What happened?

That sounds scary! Zeus needs to be examined by his veterinarian today if possible. It sounds like he may have had a seizure or a syncopal episode. Pets can have seizures for many reasons including liver disease, electrolyte imbalance, infections, inner ear problems, cancer or epilepsy. Syncopal episodes are generally related to the heart. He will need a physical exam and bloodwork to begin to narrow down and appropriately address the cause. Seizures are serious and are best addressed early.
