How long does it take for a dog's breasts to shrink after puppies?

Once a dog has puppies, their mammary glands and nipples do not go back to how they looked before they had puppies. The more litters they have the larger the tissue gets and the more it appears to hang down. Is she still nursing the puppies? They usually start to wean around 5 weeks of age. If Diva is still nursing puppies, there is a good chance her mammary tissue will get smaller once the puppies have weaned off. There is nothing that you need to do to help her body return to normal - this may be her new normal!

Yes, there could be something wrong although i see she is now spayed and this should reduce the chance of mammary gland tumors dramatically. it would be best to get it checked by your vet, this is something that will require a physical exam.

I would assume the puppies were weaned about 2 months ago, so it may still take a few more months for all of the breast tissue to firm up. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At almost 5 weeks old they can be totally weaned in the next week or two. Karma will dry up. Start offering the puppies canned puppy food the wet dry kibble mixed with canned. I would only let them nurse twice a day for the next week and only once a day the next. Then keep them off her. Yes, Sadie's mammary glands will eventually return back to a normal size, although it may take several months. If you notice any swelling, discharge, or masses in the area of her mammary glands, please have her seen by a veterinarian, as she may have an infection. You can put an e-collar (cone) on her for the next week or two to help prevent her from licking at the area.

If she stopped feeding them suddenly then mastitis would be a risk (she may refuse them because it is painful or the excess milk after she stopped could cause the problem after). If she is off form, has any fever or her milk glands are red, hot or painful to firm touch then she will need prescription treatment from a vet. If everything is otherwise good, just monitor for any changes. 48 hours of very light food if she is healthy and not underweight can discourage active milk production but do not starve her

That could be a normal reaction of the mammary glands after the season, and it is likely to resolve spontaneously one or two weeks after the season. if signs persist more than that and discharge comes out from nipples a check up would ideal as false pregnancy or mammary gland inflammation/infection may be present.
