My dog's nipples are still saggy after puppies. When will they firm up?

Once a dog has puppies, their mammary glands and nipples do not go back to how they looked before they had puppies. The more litters they have the larger the tissue gets and the more it appears to hang down. Is she still nursing the puppies? They usually start to wean around 5 weeks of age. If Diva is still nursing puppies, there is a good chance her mammary tissue will get smaller once the puppies have weaned off. There is nothing that you need to do to help her body return to normal - this may be her new normal!

The puppies have to be between 6-8 weeks old before they are fully weaned and no longer nursing at all. Once she no longer needs to produce milk the. It will dry up and her breast will shrink. Depending on the breed and how many puppies she was caring for they may not go back to normal but will drastically reduce

It is difficult to say from the picture, it would be advisable to have a check up so that she can have general check up and also that she is checked for milk, as sometimes dogs can start producing milk as a result of a phantom pregnancy.. Having said this she is still very young so this normally happens after at least a couple of seasons ! I would say yo have her checked over to put your mind at rest ! I think it would be ok to monitor him at this point. If this has not gotten better in the next week or so, it may best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hello. This is nothing to be overly concerned about. Manakoa is old enough that there are hormones circulating & this nipple just seems to be a little more sensitive to the effects of estrogen at this point in time. If you were planning on spaying her, this is a good time to consider doing so, but otherwise, as long as the nipple does not continue to show further hormonal influence, it should not significantly affect her. Waiting until February should be fine, just have your partner's son check them every couple days to make sure they aren't growing, and don't feel hot/cold or are painful to Bennie. YES, spaying her now is still a good idea, it decreases her risks of some cancers and also eliminates her potential for getting the life-threatening condition called pyometra. She is also less likely to run away and either get hit by a car or get pregnant and have a litter as a geriatric dog which is more dangerous for her. Best of luck with Bennie!
