My dog's nipples are still big after puppies. Is it permanent?

The puppies have to be between 6-8 weeks old before they are fully weaned and no longer nursing at all. Once she no longer needs to produce milk the. It will dry up and her breast will shrink. Depending on the breed and how many puppies she was caring for they may not go back to normal but will drastically reduce

Hello. If you are sure that she is not pregnant, then this is just a hormonal response. The breast gland tissue may regress a bit, but as long as she remains unsprayed, she may develop a little more with each heat cycle. Spaying her now may help regress the tissues totally, but with each additional heat cycle, she may develop just a little bit more. So yes, this is a normal condition in an unsprayed female dog. The affected female dog shows these symptoms about a month or two after her estrus (heat) is over. A hormonal imbalance is thought to play a central role in affected female dogs. Depending on the severity of problem, the symptoms may last for more than a month. Unless symptoms persist, treatment is typically unnecessary. Otherwise, your veterinarian may recommend hormonal supplementation or spaying to prevent further episodes. To reduce mammary gland secretions, your veterinarian will advise you on using cold or warm packs to minimize the stimulation that promotes lactation. An Elizabethan collar (cone) can also help prevent the self-nursing or licking behavior that can stimulate lactation. In some patients, reducing the daily food intake can help to reduce the production of milk. Yes, there could be something wrong although i see she is now spayed and this should reduce the chance of mammary gland tumors dramatically. it would be best to get it checked by your vet, this is something that will require a physical exam.
