My spayed dog's large mammary glands are bothering her. Will they shrink?

This swelling is probably a hormonal response to being in heat. As long as she still has hormones in her system the swelling will remain. Since your vet did not feel like it was anything significant, it is probably fine. It will eventually go away on its own and if not it will certainly go away when you spay her. If you feel like the swelling is getting larger or starts to feel firm or painful than I would be concerned. Otherwise it is just a side effect of her being in heat.

Her vagina will probably return to normal size in a few months, this typically happens after a dog is spayed. the redness and itching are probably allergy related, this will need to be checked and treated with allergy meds by a vet. Kennel cough in most cases does not require treatment but she is on antibiotics already so no reason to worry, it will resolve soon. regarding the licking of the spay wound, you need to put an e-collar around her neck for 2 weeks post surgery to prevent this from happening.

Yes, there could be something wrong although i see she is now spayed and this should reduce the chance of mammary gland tumors dramatically. it would be best to get it checked by your vet, this is something that will require a physical exam.

I am very sorry that Cookie is swollen and uncomfortable. I would advise separating her and the kitten for a while until this behavior ends, and Cookie's mammary gland heals. Use a cool compress to help with the swelling as well. A few times day, for 5 minutes. Also make sure that Cookie is not self-nursing, and if she does place an e-collar on her. Watch for signs of mastitis or mammary gland inflammation/ infection; discharge swelling (which is worsening) pain foul odor redness If you believe that Cookie could have mastitis I would advise taking her to a veterinarian for pain relief, anti-inflammatory medication and possibly antibiotics. I am sorry for the delay in answering your question. It sounds like you’ve gotten her to the vet by now, and I hope you got some answers. My thought when reading your question is that some dogs will have some remnant ovarian tissue (small amounts ovarian tissue that either is left behind at surgery or is growing elsewhere in the abdomen). Ovarian tissue can cause false pregnancy which could cause these symptoms. A hormone profile test (run on blood) should be able to give your vet information to determine if there is ovarian tissue still present. Once a dog has puppies, their mammary glands and nipples do not go back to how they looked before they had puppies. The more litters they have the larger the tissue gets and the more it appears to hang down. Is she still nursing the puppies? They usually start to wean around 5 weeks of age. If Diva is still nursing puppies, there is a good chance her mammary tissue will get smaller once the puppies have weaned off. There is nothing that you need to do to help her body return to normal - this may be her new normal!

It could be observed up to a month after hysterectomy, but if it happens many months or years after the procedure then it is not normal and could be a sign of either a remnant ovary syndrome or a mammary gland tumor. in such a case i would recommend having it checked by your vet.
