Why are my puppy's nipples swollen and bruised after her first heat?

Hi my 11 month old puppy has just finished her first season. I've noticed her nipples are slightly swollen and veiny. They almost look bruised. Do you know what this could be?

That could be a normal reaction of the mammary glands after the season, and it is likely to resolve spontaneously one or two weeks after the season.
if signs persist more than that and discharge comes out from nipples a check up would ideal as false pregnancy or mammary gland inflammation/infection may be present.

Often around the nipples will have increased blood flow during a heat, so they could look bruised.

I recommend feeling the nipples and glands, if there is any pain, coldness, or heat present, then have Willow seen by a vet right away as concern for mastitis is possible (however this is not the correct time of cycle for mastitis).

Otherwise, just monitor them and see if they go back to normal in a week or so.
If they get any worse have Willow checked by a vet.

Dogs do not have periods like people do, instead they have a heat cycle. This can cause swelling of the vaginal area as well as the nipples as hormonal changes will lead to this. If you don't wish to have puppies, I highly recommend having Neka spayed. Spaying can also prevent uterine infections (pyometra) and decrease the chances of some cancers.

Poor Effie! It is concerning that her mammary glands are swollen and are hurting her, and it is possible that she has an infection of her mammary glands. There would be a chance these could swollen due to mammary tumors, but that more typically appears in dogs between 5-10 years of age. Finally, it could be due to her heat cycle and she may just be a little more sensitive that norma. I would have Effie seen by a vet in the morning for a health check just to make sure there isn't a health issue causing her symptoms.

Dogs can develop mammary glands, produce milk, and will sometimes even start to nest and collect small stuffed animals to nurse. This is normal and will subside in a few weeks. However, it is recommended to get her spayed before her next heat so she doesn't have to go through that stress again. The other possible cause is something called a pyometra. This is an infected uterus and is life-threatening. My dog's nipples are enlarged after her first heat. Is this normal?

Hello. If you are sure that she is not pregnant, then this is just a hormonal response. The breast gland tissue may regress a bit, but as long as she remains unsprayed, she may develop a little more with each heat cycle. Spaying her now may help regress the tissues totally, but with each additional heat cycle, she may develop just a little bit more. So yes, this is a normal condition in an unsprayed female dog. Why is my dog's vulva still swollen after heat, and nipples enlarged?

It is not unusual for the vulva to remain swollen for a period of time after the "heat" cycle is over. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. The first hear cycle will stimulate full development of her mammary chain. It is not unusual for the nipples to enlarge. The timing and symptoms could point to a false pregnancy. Have a examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. Treatment is typically not required in mild cases. Symptoms should abate within 2-3 weeks. If they don't or her behavior worsens, your vet can dispense medications to decrease milk production and possibly tranquilizers/sedatives for anxiety. Severe cases can be treated with hormone replacement therapy. To prevent future episodes, having her spayed would be the recommended course of action.

Why are my dog's breasts swollen and she's whiny after her heat?

She is likely suffering from a phantom pregnancy, i would recommend taking her to the vet anyway in order to get it checked, just to be on the safe side. there is no treatment for this (other than getting her spayed, which i strongly recommend in her case), it will resolve eventually within a few weeks, but it is also likely to reoccur in future heat cycles.
