My dog's breasts are full and leaking milk after puppies. What to do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How old are her puppies? If they are under 4 weeks then you will need to bottle feed the puppies. If they 3-4 weeks start offering canned puppy food along with bottle feeding and have them fully weaned by 5-6 weeks. Without forcing Cali to nurse them there aren't any other options. I would suggest not breeding her again and have her spayed since she is unwilling to continue to raise the puppies and this likely will be a repetitive behavior. The puppies have to be between 6-8 weeks old before they are fully weaned and no longer nursing at all. Once she no longer needs to produce milk the. It will dry up and her breast will shrink. Depending on the breed and how many puppies she was caring for they may not go back to normal but will drastically reduce

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This sounds completely normal for Gracie. She is trying to wean the puppies and her teats will get smaller over time. Puppies and Gracie should be dewormed with pyrantel pamoate starting at 2 weeks of age. The deworming should be done every 2-3 weeks on the puppies. Gracie should be dewormed at least twice 3 weeks apart. Good luck

If she stopped feeding them suddenly then mastitis would be a risk (she may refuse them because it is painful or the excess milk after she stopped could cause the problem after). If she is off form, has any fever or her milk glands are red, hot or painful to firm touch then she will need prescription treatment from a vet. If everything is otherwise good, just monitor for any changes. 48 hours of very light food if she is healthy and not underweight can discourage active milk production but do not starve her

I would assume the puppies were weaned about 2 months ago, so it may still take a few more months for all of the breast tissue to firm up. Give things a bit more time, & please consider spaying Bella, unless she is a valuable breeding dog. Take care.

Yes that’s normal. They are old enough to be weaned and that is what she’s doing. Her milk should dry up and she will start to ignore the puppies all the time. I am so sorry to hear this happened. You do not have to do anything to "dry her up". Since the puppies are not nursing she will dry up on her own. Milk is only produced in response to the puppies sucking on the teats. Do not handle the teats or try to strip them - you will make matters worse. Not only will she continue to produce milk but your could introduce bacteria into the teats and cause mastitis. Just leave her alone and she will dry up in a few days. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
