My Lab has bloody, inconsistent stool. Is renovation stress the cause?

It's probably just stress related colitis. I suggest you start her on a probiotic as soon as possible. Any probiotic made for dogs is OK but personally I think Fortiflora is the best. NO human probiotics. One packet on her food daily. I would use it at least for 2 weeks straight no matter if the diarrhea clears up in a day or two. Diarrhea with blood can be due to stress, or it can be from an infection or parasites. If she’s bright and alert and eating and drinking normally this should resolve quickly. If she’s lethargic, depressed, not eating well then please take her right in for an exam and treatment. They will give medication to control the diarrhea, and may check for parasites, and blood work to check for anemia and dehydration. I recommend taking her for long walks and playing with her like you normally do so she’ll relax in the new apartment. In dogs infected with parvo virus, there can be long term health effects from the infection such as chronic gastrointestinal disease. I would recommend going on a sensitive stomach formula and adding in a probiotic to see if this helps. As always, check the stool for intestinal parasites to make sure a parasite is not the cause. Probably just stress colitis from the trip. I would not be overly worried. I suggest you get her a probiotic to take for a week or so - one made for dogs, not humans. You can buy it at any large pet store like Petco.

Hello. If you have access to a good probiotic for dogs, then I would start this immediately. If no dog probiotics, then the human product, Culturelle, is fine to use. Just use the adult recommended dose. I would also make sure they only receive bottled water, or water that has been boiled & cooled. Make sure they have no access to any standing water outside. If your veterinarian can send off a stool sample to test for other organisms that cause diarrhea ( this is usually referred to as a PCR Diarrhea Panel ), this would be very useful, too. Loose stools can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. Keep in mind that this may also be just transient and could self-resolve. However, if it continues, I recommend that you have Lucy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It is probably stress colitis. I suggest you give him one dose of Immodium (loperamide) if you can find it there. JUST ONE DOSE - no more; one 2mg tablet. Next, withhold all food for 8 hours to let his intestines rest. Nothing. Water is fine to have available at all times. After 8 hours, you can start feeding him small amounts of his regular food every few hours (instead of one or two larger meals he gets). Finally, if you can, get him a probiotic I would feed him that for the next 2 weeks minimum. It must be one made for dogs. No human products. Hope this helps.
