Why do my Golden Retrievers have recurring mucus stools in the Caribbean?

Congratulations on your new puppy! it is very common for puppies to carry parasites or infections. The most common ones are giardia, coccidia, intestinal worms or viruses like Parvo. I cannot speak to what are the most likely illnesses seen in the Philippines as I have worked only in the US and UK - but I do recommend taking her to the vet as soon as theyre open to have tests done (take a fecal sample with you) and they will determine what type of treatment is needed. The most likely tests would be a Parvo test, +- blood test, a fecal float for parasites and a giardia test.

It definitely seems like an infection was the initial cause of the diarrhea and was well-controlled with the metronidazole. Anytime we treat for infection, we change the environment of the gut flora and it's not unusual for it to take some time for things to get back to normal after the antibiotics have been discontinued. It's also possible for the infection to return if not treated for long enough, or if the most appropriate antibiotic was not used. An increase in mucous tells me that there are issues within the colon where most fermentation by normal gut bacteria takes place. If the stools are still somewhat normal appearing (besides the excess mucous) and Giardia has been ruled-out as a cause, then I would wait a few days to see if things return to normal. You may consider adding probiotics to their diet if also advised by your veterinarian. I hope this helps and Bella and Pepper get better soon.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While this could be parasites, this is likely some degree of colitis. You can add a probiotic to her diet such as Fortiflora. You can use it for 1-2 weeks to see if it makes a difference. If it does not, you can consider switching to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that the stools can be assessed. If she develops diarrhea at any point before then at that point she should definitely be evaluated by her veterinarian. Good luck!

Take a stool sample to your vet for testing. Parasites such as coccidia and giardia are not treated with a general dewormer and require a specific medication. Your vet should also palapte his hips and possibly take an xray to determine why he is having problems sitting or standing. He could have hip dysplasia or another orthopedic issue. Hello. I think this is an excellent idea. We are learning more every day about the importance of probiotics & their effects on the gut microbiome. Some dog foods even supply extra probiotics in their formulas, so this is an option. Giardia can be frustrating to deal with. Using a probiotic daily may help in combating any potential flare-ups. If he did not get a second deworming treatment he should, even if his fecal analysis came up negative. He should be dewormed each time he gets his vaccinations. Just because worm eggs aren't found in the analysis doesn't mean they aren't there. As far as food is concerned, if you change his diet, do so gradually, offering old and new food in separate bowls at first, then offer 75%-25% old/new food for a few days before moving to 50-50 for a few more days, then 25-75, for a few more days. Feed the highest quality food you can afford, my personal favorites being Science Diet and Royal Canin.

Unfortunately we have. I would highly recommend placing Echo on probiotics (i.e. Advita, Fortiflora, or Proviable) for roughly 2-4 weeks, adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the Pie filling) in his food daily, Purina EN Gastrointestinal food can be tried, and then consider having the stool rechecked through your veterinarian. Oftentimes if a pet has many worms they need multiple dewormings to get things to return to normal. I would try those suggestions first and see how Echo responds. If the stools still have not resolved after 2-4 weeks, then consider treating Echo with a long term antibiotic (i.e. Tylan powder) to treat for suspected inflammatory bowel disease.
