Is smelly discharge and green eye boogers normal after dog spay?

Hi ! If Holly is well in herself, eating bright passing normal feaces and urine, I would not worry. A little bit of vaginal discharge is expected folllowing the surgery and should gradually decrease and disappear. It can take sometimes a couple of weeks for it to settle completely. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Harley! No, it is not normal to have green discharge from the vulva after being spayed. She could have a uterine stump infection (the part of the uterus that is left), a urinary tract infection or a vaginitis. Harley should be seen by the Vet that did the surgery today before the weekend. They will likely put her on antibiotics to see if that takes care of it. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is probably ok for now though it does indicate that there was some discharge and potentially an infection. I would recommend that you keep a very close eye on the incision site. If you notice any active discharge (moist instead of dry), bleeding or pain, have her evaluated as soon as possible to make sure it is not an active infection. Keep the area clean for now. I'm sorry Piggy isn't doing well! The lump under her skin could be caused by a local inflammatory reaction to the vaccine, but it should have resolved by now. That is something that should be seen by the vet. I am very concerned that she has a greenish discharge coming from her vagina, and she could be suffering from a condition called a pyometra. If only her ovaries were removed during her spay, then the uterus remains and is still prone to developing an infection. She could also have a stump pyometra. This is when the remnants of the uterus become infected, and while it's not common, it is serious when it occurs. Finally, she could be suffering from vaginitis, an infection of the vagina. Homeopathic sepia will not treat any of these. If she still has her uterus, it will need to be removed and she will need antibiotics. A stump pyometra will also need to be treated surgically, and will require antibiotics. Vaginitis requires antibiotics. She should see a vet immediately to diagnose what is causing the green discharge so she can be treated. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Discharge from this area can either be coming from the urinary tract (uti, etc ) or reproductive tract. Likely your vet will rule out uti first with a urinalysis and urine culture. A sterile vaginal exam may also be recommended. If persistent and not related to a uti then it may become important to make sure she was properly spayed. A little bit of discharge is normal and may not be related to the surgery. You should how ever always pay attention to any changes or deviations from Ginger's 'normal'. I recommend to call your veterinarian and tell them what is happening. They may ask to examine her again to look at the discharge under a microscope to check for any infection or they may suggest something else. I do recommend to have Kuma re-examined as well. Some discharge is normal and this does vary from dog to dog. From the photo, this looks excessive but again, it's hard to say if this is normal or abnormal at this time. Have the vet look at a sample under the microscope to check for excessive bacteria which could indicate a vaginitis. Supplementing with probiotics (I recommend Purina's Forti-Flora) and feeding a diet that also promotes healthy bacterial populations (I recommend Royal Canin) may also help to keep high amounts of beneficial bacteria.
