My dog's eye is watery and red after eyelid surgery. Is this normal?

I am sorry to hear about Ellie but glad the itching has stopped! The skin around her eye looks a little red and I assume this is what you are speaking of. If her stitches were just removed in the past few days it is possible there was just some residual irritation from the sutures. We can also see inflammation around the eyes like this due to allergies. I would let your vet know about her eyelid and see if they feel a trial of an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine would be beneficial, or if they recommend a topical eye ointment on the lid to try to decrease irritation.

This can sometimes happen during surgery, especially when the blood pressure changes or the eye gets irritated. I would not worry too much about it. If the redness has not disappeared by Thursday or Friday or if it is getting worse, , take your dog back to the vet for a recheck.

Some discharge is going to be normal because the surgery is associated with alot of swelling of the eyelids, and swelling can cause the eyes to produce more tears. Tears mixed with the ointment is going to look a little mucous-like. If the other dog is not going to lick her eyes or try to get her to play wildly, then yes it can be around her. If she is really squinting badly tomorrow, or if you see the corneas starting to look blue or cloudy, you need to take her in for a recheck right away. If sh'es eating fine, don't worry about the water--she will drink when she's thirsty.

Her veterinarian may prescribe an eye medication to help or even check the eye for a scratch across the surface. The sutures could have irritated her eye a bit. These conditions are not only very painful but they can also get worse quickly. She also needs to wear an elizabethan collar at all times to stop any rubbing. Have her examined quickly so she is out of pain and gets the correct treatment.

This does look quite uncomfortable for your pet Lana and I would say that yes a warm water rag is ok to use, but then I would consider getting a second opinion on this eye to see if there is more that can be done to help resolve the complications that occurred. It looks to be quite a bit of swelling there, but I am unsure how many days post sx your pet is in. It is typical to see post op swelling for 3-5 days, but it should be slowly improving every day. Topical as well as oral antibiotics may be needed here if there is a suspected infection at the incision site. Even a suture reaction is possible here. I hope that Lana's eye gets better soon! It is ikely that the swelling is due to irritation, allergic reaction or mild trauma to the eye (some dogs may hurt themselves while having a cone on). You should clean the eye with warm, boiled water and monitor Milla for a few hours. If you notice that the swelling is getting bigger or Milla looks in pain you should get in touch with your vet. If it is only mild trauma or irritation the swelling should go down in the next few hours.
