My dog has bites after late Simparica. Is it fleas or allergies?

If your veterinarian suspects a secondary infection, they could prescribe antibiotics. You can also use an e-collar to prevent self trauma. Good luck!

Hello. I am so sorry for your concerns with Harley. Unfortunately, you must have a terrible flea problem in your area. Everything you are doing is appropriate & good, but it can take 3 months of constant battle to eliminate a current flea problem. Continue the Simparica, & retreat your yard & home as needed. You can bathe Harley weekly with a an anti-itch shampoo, one that contains either 1% hydrocortisone or pramoxine. They also make leave on conditioners & mousse's you might try. Because Simparica ( & all other oral & topical flea products ) require the flea to bite in order to die, you can also use a flea shampoo along with the anti-itch shampoo for an immediate knockdown of the fleas on Harley. I would also consider a injection of Cytopoint, which is immunotherapy that your veterinarian can administer. This will do nothing for fleas, but may help the irritation from the flea bites. They are each labeled for once a month so it is safe and will be more effective if you alternate them every 2 weeks instead of using them at the same time each month. make sure the environment stays treated also to minimize what gets on him.

Hi there and thank you for your post! Those choices are great- Simparica is an excellent flea and tick preventative and heartgard is an excellent heartworm preventative. The shampoo you mentioned is good too. If she is itching or licking her paws frequently, she may have an allergy to something in the environment (like a seasonal allergy) or she may have a food allergy. You should be okay with the Simparica but you may want to request unflavored HeartGard in case she has a food allergy. Typically if an animal is allergic to grains, it is typically when they ingest them. If you are concerned about the oatmeal shampoo, you may want to try a shampoo that is aloe based instead. Hello. It is difficult to say if these are actually bites, or some other allergic type reaction. Do the bumps show up in different areas each day? How long do they last, a few minutes, hours or days? This might give a better idea of the actual cause of the lesions. I cannot recommend using any medications, but I can recommend trying something over the counter. Petco carries Zymox shampoo & a lotion with hydrocortisone. They also carry a line called Well & Good that also has a hydrocortisone spray. These are very soothing for inflamed & itchy skin. I would also be sure to use a good flea & tick preventative as this will help to discourage all biting insects. You can safely use one after the other if you wait at least 2 weeks in between applications. So since it has been 3 weeks, then you are ok to switch to Simparica now. I would also recommend treating the condo with a flea fogger purchased from your local Home Depot or Lowe's.
