My dog has flea allergies. Can I use Simparica and Advantix?

Generally, we at Pet Coach recommend using one flea and tick medication. I would recommend only using the K9 advantix on Pistol. It kills fleas, repels fleas, kills flea egg and larvae, kills ticks, repels ticks, and kills and/or repels mosquitoes. Simparica only kills fleas and ticks. You will get everything you need for Pistol's protection with the K9 advantix. I hope this helps!

Simparica is a once a month flea and tick preventive medication and giving it daily will soon overdose your dog and possibly cause severe health problems and death. So please, give Simparica only as instructed on the label. A one time application will likely be enough to kill the mange. If not, ask your vet to prescribe Bravecto (one-time application) for your dog. You can give Omega 3 fatty acids daily.

It is ok to give trifexis and simparica together (staggered by 2 weeks is great). Both of those medications will protect against fleas so there is some overlap with that. If you want to streamline how many medications you are giving Dakota monthly, Another option would be to use sentinel or interceptor instead of the trifexis and give with that with simparica monthly. These products contain the same heart worm preventative (milbemycin) as trifexis but do not contain any medication to kill adult fleas. (Trifexis contains both the milbemycin for heart worm prevention and Spinosad for fleas). That way you would be giving one medication for heart worm prevention (sentinel or interceptor ) and one for flea and tick prevention (simparica). Another option is to continue trifexis and add in a tick collar (such as the preventic collar or the seresto collar). I know there are so many products and options it is confusing ! While Simparica is licensed for flea and tick control it likely has a similar effect on mites (similar to Bravecto). Apoquel will not heal allergies, but it will relieve itching caused by allergies in many cases.

You can safely use one after the other if you wait at least 2 weeks in between applications. So since it has been 3 weeks, then you are ok to switch to Simparica now. I would also recommend treating the condo with a flea fogger purchased from your local Home Depot or Lowe's. BUT if this is the first time giving one or both of the drugs then I would give one at a time 2 days apart in case one causes a problem. Then if there are no issues give them together next month. If you’re noticing increased itching in that area and you found a flea, you may try switching the flea prevention to see if that helps. Fleas can become immune to products. The top products on the market are oral products such as Nexgard and Simparica. Most pets can use these products but you should talk with your veterinarian before switching. They are administered once a month and at this point appear to work very well. If the itching goes away, then you know it was related to flea bites. Best of luck.
