Are Simparica, Heartgard, and shampoo safe for my allergic dog?

If Adam seems to have skin problems secondary to food allergies it is possible that she is reacting to the flavoring in the Bravecto and Interceptor. You may want to look into using unflavored Heartgard and something like a Seresto collar (although this could cause topical skin irritation similar to the Frontline). Unfortunately there is no chemical free heartworm preventative, and most ‘natural’ options for flea prevention contain essential oils that don’t work well and can even cause harm.

They are each labeled for once a month so it is safe and will be more effective if you alternate them every 2 weeks instead of using them at the same time each month. make sure the environment stays treated also to minimize what gets on him.

Environmental allergies are usually to things like grass, pollen, trees, etc - all the same stuff humans are allergic to. And these allergies can appear at any age. If benedryl helps, it is considered quite safe to use long term for most dogs (talk with your vet first). If you are trying to avoid medicaitons and side effects, talk with your vet about the cytopoint injection. It is not a medication or drug- it is actually just a protein that blocks the itch receptor and is considered very safe. It lasts 1-2 months in most dogs. If it works for Nikki, it also shows that her allergies are environmental in nature (that shot does not work well for food allergies). There are also many great sprays, mousses, and foot soaks that may help - talk to your vet about these options. Getting back to the food situation, if you have any concerns about the safety of the food, I definitely recommend switching. Though I will say I have several patients on Core Wellness doing fantastic as far as I can tell. For allergic dogs, I do like to avoid the common allergens which are chicken, pork, and beef (it's almost never grains). So sticking with fish or a more "novel" protein like lamb, kangaroo, or rabbit may help. hope this helps and best wishes to you and Nikki!

While Simparica is licensed for flea and tick control it likely has a similar effect on mites (similar to Bravecto). Apoquel will not heal allergies, but it will relieve itching caused by allergies in many cases.

Hello. I do not think giving it 5 days late makes a tremendous difference. You can certainly use a shampoo, that will not interfere with things, but please consider that this may be allergies & you may need to talk to your vet about additional things that can be done to help the skin. I think both are good products with few side effects. The topical medications do sometimes cause some irritation to the skin, even if it doesn’t seem red, but it typically does not last long. Oral preventatives in he same class as Simparica can cause gastrointestinal signs and lethargy. You could try a different oral medication like Nexgard or Bravecto - some do better with one over the other. I wouldn’t worry about the smell from the Vectra.
