My dog has itchy bumps on her belly, not fleas or ticks. What helps?

Hello. Is it possible that Charlie was bitten by something like a tick? This just looks like an acute inflammatory reaction. If you have some hydrocortisone cream, I would just rub a bit into the skin several times a day. If you do not have any cream, then please visit your Petco who will have several brands, including Zymox which is a very good product. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

These bumps resemble something called folliculitis which is a bacterial infection of the skin but the infection has spread down into the hair follicles. This may resolve without any treatment but if the conditions worsens or spreads, you should take Zora to your veterinarian. The causes of this are many including unknown or idiopathic causes, allergies, external parasites, etc. Your vet can evaluate Zora if it spreads or worsens. They will likely advise some oral antibiotics, possibly something more than Zyrtec for itching, medicated shampoo to flush the hair follicles, etc. Good luck with Zora and just keep a close eye on these areas.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

As there is no over-the-counter product available for dogs, there is not anything you can give him orally. Topical anti-itch sprays available for dogs often contain hydrocortisone; it will likely help with the itch, but it is likely to be only temporary relief and makes his skin susceptible to infection. As such, I do not recommend them. However, bathing him with a colloidal oatmeal shampoo in cool to tepid water may help sooth the itch, if only temporarily. If it does not help or his itching returns soon after the bath, I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian to look a little closer at the issue. Hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. Without pictures it is difficult to say what the red bumps are. I would presume a possible allergic reaction / skin infection. My suggestion would be to start the following, all of which can be found online: 1. Malacetic conditioning spray (spray to affected area 2-3 times per day until resolved is the typical recommendation) 2. Duoxo PS Calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved is what most dermatologists would recommend Benadryl has been used on cases like this. The typical recommended safe dose for Benadryl is 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours. I hope this helps. If the bumps to not resolve or if they worsen I would seek veterinary care.
