How to stop fleas from biting my dog when nothing seems to work?

I am sorry to hear about Sherlock! If he is still getting attacked by fleas you most likely need to treat your home and yard. You could consider a product that also repels the fleas such as a Seresto collar or Vectra 3D, but even with these products, if there are a large number of fleas in the area you will not be preventing all bites without treating your home and yard. It sounds as if Blitz is becoming re-infested with fleas even after applying appropriate flea preventative measures (i.e. Seresto collar). I would suspect that the environmental control has not yet been adequate to appropriate kill the fleas. I would recommend to my clients to hire a professional parasite control company to perform a treatment for the area (inside and outside). It can take as long as 3 months to adequately control all life stages of the flea life cycle. It is also possible that even though the fleas have been controlled (if you are no longer seeing live adult fleas), that Blitz suffers from a flea allergy. In these cases the itch can last long after the flea is gone. You can continue to bathe Blitz in a soothing shampoo, but if the itch does not resolve it is best to have him seen by his veterinarian to determine what additional anti-pruritic (anti-itch) medication may be needed. It is not uncommon for us to also see secondary bacterial infections (pyoderma) happen due to chronic itching, and a topical medicated shampoo may also be required from his veterinarian.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

I am so sorry that you are having this problem with Nyla. I certainly understand how frustrating it is to watch your dog be so itchy. If you have seen fleas on Nyla, a flea and tick shampoo will only work for about 2 days, so you will need to find a long term flea preventative option for her. Unfortunately, even when we remove the fleas, if a dog is allergic to flea bites, they will stay itchy. You will need to discuss resolving any secondary infections which will make her more itchy. This can involve topical treatments (like shampoos, wipes or sprays) or may involve oral medications. Thank you for trying to take such good care of Princess. Fleas can be hard to get rid of. 1) Make sure you're using a good product. I recommend Frontline or Advantix. There are cheaper options at most pet stores, but they don't always work. Make sure you use them at least 3 days AFTER or BEFORE a bath. Stop the shampoos since they won't help more than the topical treatment. 2) Vacuum your house as frequently as possible - carpets, couches, anything with fabric. Aim for 2-3 times per week. Empty out the canister or bag in a trash can outside after every vacuum. 3) Check with a local pet store for a product to kill fleas on the furniture. 4) It's ok to put a small amount neosporin on any wounds Princess has some scratching. It won't work as well as oral antibiotics from the vet, but may help a bit. 5) Make sure every pet in your house is treated for fleas (dogs and cats). 6) Sometimes a professional exterminator is needed for the fleas and sometimes a vet visit is needed to stop the itching. Since it doesn't sound like that's an option, just keep up with the fleas as best you can. Good luck with Princess.

Treat the environment, both inside and out for fleas. then you can do a seresto collar that will last about 6 months to help repell the fleas from getting on him and give a bravecto tablet that will last for 3 months and kill an fleas that get on him. It is proven that good flea control must be utilized for at least 3 months straight to break the life cycle of the eggs to eliminate the problem. His skin does seem inflamed and infected so your vet may need to see him to give him antibiotics and possibily steriods to contorl the itching and clear the infection until the fleas get under control.

Looks like your little lady is giving herself some hot spots there. If there is a hot spot forming under the hair then the best thing to do is to remove the hair and cleanse the area with an antibacterial solution. Some dogs require topical and/or oral antibiotics and other dogs benefit from some steroids to stop the itch. Most hot spots are secondary to underlying allergies (inhaled/environmental, food, or flea). If seasonal environmental is most likely. The best way to help her would be to see your family vet to have the areas addressed topically and so that medications can be prescribed to treat any infection and stop the itch.
