My dog ate too many jerky treats. What symptoms should I look for?

Naughty pup! He should be fine. At worst, you may see some mild stomach upset ([vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1/) and/or [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/)). If he hasn't vomited by now, he likely won't vomit at all. Mild upset can usually be[ treated at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-treat-your-dogs-upset-stomach) with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. He may also become constipated from all the treats, so if he hasn't pooped in more than 12 hours, try adding some plain canned pumpkin (**NOT pumpkin pie filling**) to his food and increase exercise. Both may stimulate defecation. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water as well. If he doesn't defecate for more than 24 hours, have him physically examined by your veterinarian.

Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. Consider withholding food for the next 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. If Dexter develops stomach upset without any other symptoms, you can fast him then offer a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If he becomes lethargic, stops eating or develops abdominal pain then he should be examined by your veterinarian.

If she is bright and alert and willing to eat i recommend feeding small, bland low fat meals and offering pedialyte and also fresh water to reduce the risk of developing dehydration. If she is restless and reluctant to eat she should be assessed by a vet. Obstructions, impactions and pancreatitis are all relatively common after breaking into the treat jar!

I think the worst that will happen is some mild GI upset like vomiting and/or diarrhea - both of which should be self-limiting (meaning they should go away on their own within 48 hours). If they don't, then he needs to see a vet. He may be more tired than normal but not comatose so if he is sleeping and you can't get a reaction out of him then you need to get him to a vet ASAP. I recommend no food for 8-12 hours but be sure he has plenty of water available. These treats don't really contain anything toxic at large doses but remember, every dog reacts differently to medications/supplements just like people so if, at any time, you are worried about him you need to have him examined by a vet.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He may be showing signs of dietary indiscretion which can happen from eating something that does not sit well in the stomach. Clinical symptoms that can occur include inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Sometimes this resolves on its own. However, sometimes this does require some form of therapy which is mostly supportive in nature. Since he has developed diarrhea, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to prescribe an anti-diarrhea medication. The jerky could certainly have upset her stomach. Generally, it's ok to wait for 24 hours before going in, so if she's resting normally, moving around, and eating/drinking I think it's ok to wait until tomorrow and then go to the vet for an x-ray, maybe bloodwork, and supportive care.
