My dog ate jerky. She's bloated, drinking lots. When to call vet?

If she is resting quietly, not vomiting, and having no breathing issues then she is probably fine for you to just monitor her now. I strongly suggest you don't feed her anything for 24 hours but make sure she has plenty of water available to drink. If she is having any troubles then she needs to go to the emergency vet. As long as she is acting ok you could monitor her for additional signs. If she starts retching, seems uncomfortable, starts drooling, is painful, or the distension persists then she should be examined by a vet. Your vet can take an X-ray to evaluate her abdomen and determine the exact cause of her problem.

The passing of bowel motions is positive, as is the fact she is willing to drink water. If she begins vomiting, especially empty retching you will need to source emergency care for her but otherwise report to your regular vet in the morning. A probiotic supplement will help restore gut balance once the over indulgence has passed

Hello! This is what we call "food bloat" which happens when dogs manage to eat a massive amount of food! Their stomachs stretch with the huge amount of food, causing the bloated bellies. When people bring these pets to me, we usually recommend putting them on IV fluids until the bloating resolves, and not feeding at all. Their stomachs could potentially rupture, when the kibbles swell, and mix with water. So, at this point, I wouldn't suggest feeding them. Ideally they should be checked by their vet, to see if they are okay recovering at home, or whether they need treatment at the clinic.

If you suspect Jake ate a foreign body or he is showing signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, painful or tender abdomen, severe bloating of the abdomen, or bloody vomit or diarrhea, it is best to bring him into your vet ASAP. They can examine him and check for any possible foreign bodies that may be causing an obstruction or other issues.

Since last night was Halloween, think about if there's anything she could have eaten that she shouldn't have and take her to the vet ASAP if you realize your chocolate stash or your entire pan of bacon wrapped something or anothers from the potluck is missing. If you can't think of anything she ate, it's generally ok to wait 24 hours to see if she get back on her food naturally. Sometimes something goes wrong in the gut and we don't know why but it resolves quickly. If she's not back to normal in 24 hours, or has any vomiting or diarrhea in the mean time, she needs to go to her vet for evaluation and supportive care.
