My 11-week-old puppy has diarrhea after eating beef jerky. What to do?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Diarrhea in a young puppy is almost always from intestinal parasites (worms). If the diarrhea does not clear up on it's own within 24-38 hours then he should see a vet for a fecal test. I doubt he would have that much diarrhea from some deli Turkey but if it is, the diarrhea should clear up on it's own.

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Diarrhea is a signs referring to a intestinal problem. It could be due to dietary indiscretion (possibly meat tenderizer), parasitic infestation, bacterial diseases or viral diseases (unlikely as she is vaccinated). 
You could provide bland food (boiled breast chicken and rice) for a couple of days but, if she continues to have diarrhea, might get dehydrated. You could also add some probiotics and probiotics to her diet, you can fined them at your local pet store.
 If you can spot blood in the faces or if she get lethargic and not eating, or if she start vomiting, I would suggest to have her checked by your veterinarian as soon as possible. 
Remove the feces straight after she has done them to avoid ingestion, possibly the meat tenderizer might have change the "taste". Good luck and post again on the forum if you need further advices. I hope my answer was helpful.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Signs of a blockage are usually not eating, lethargy and vomiting. Rarely (less than 10%) just diarrhea. It is most likely an upset stomach. I would avoid giving beef raw hides. If the diarrhea is bad then fast him for 12-24 hours then offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish you the best!

That could cause diarrhea depending on if it had any sort of flavoring/coating. With a puppy that young diarrhea could also be caused by G.I. parasites such as roundworms as well as any dietary changes which is common when they go to a new home. Alternatively diarrhea in puppies could be an early sign of parvovirus. If the diarrhea continues, becomes bloody, or Moose stops eating he should go to the veterinarian for exam.

Poor Stormee! It sounds like the deer jerky has upset her stomach. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, it looks like Snowy is having some diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, ranging from dietary indiscretion (he ate something he shouldn't have), diet change, gastrointestinal parasites (worms), or other organ system diseases like liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, etc. I recommend feeding Snowy a bland diet such as boiled (unseasoned) chicken or hamburger and rice, in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 3-4 days, to help firm up his stools. You can also try adding in a small amount of Metamucil (original, unflavored) powder to this food. Metamucil is an over-the-counter fiber supplement for people that we often use to help dogs with diarrhea. He would likely benefit from about 1/4 teaspoon of Metamucil in his food twice a day. If you are not noticing an improvement in his diarrhea after 2-3 days, I recommend bringing him (and a sample of his stool) to your veterinarian. At that time, a fecal analysis can be performed, and any other diagnostics as needed. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck with Snowy!
