My dog ate too many treats, throwing up rusty liquid. When to see vet?

I would recommend taking him back to the vet if he is still vomiting. Those type of treat are very high in fats and salts. This could lead to sever gastrointestinal upset or even pancreatitis. Most patients will need medications to help stop the vomiting if the stomach has become very inflamed. I would recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice for at least 24 hours and staying away from high fat dog treats.

If he hasn't vomited by now, he likely won't vomit at all. He may also become constipated from all the treats, so if he hasn't pooped in more than 12 hours, try adding some plain canned pumpkin (**NOT pumpkin pie filling**) to his food and increase exercise. Both may stimulate defecation. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water as well. If he doesn't defecate for more than 24 hours, have him physically examined by your veterinarian.

Poor Gulliver! He could have an upset stomach from too many treats. If he is otherwise acting fine, you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and see how he does with that. If she has a sensitive stomach too many treats can definitely cause GI upset. I would pick up all food and snacks and offer a bland meal of some boiled chicken and rice to see if it helps settle her stomach and also use an alternative treat at training (and let your trainer know so they don't give her the wrong one.) If she is continuing to vomit, can't keep anything at all down, or has been ill for more than a day, then a trip to your vet ASAP is best.

Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. If necessary, withhold food for 24 hours, allowing small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until vomiting/diarrhea resolve. If symptoms persist, consider an exam with your veterinarian.

If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

She probably vomited because she ate a lot of different treats. At this point, you shouldn’t be concerned but if she continues to vomit or becomes lethargic then she should be examined by your vet. Any type of new diet or treat can cause gastric upset and new foods should be introduced gradually.
