My dog ate tin foil, vomited, and has diarrhea. Can I wait it out?

Hello. If she is not having any difficulties passing her stool, she should be fine. I might go ahead & feed her 1-2 teaspoons of canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) with each meal over the next 2-3 days just to be sure all the foil has been pushed through. That's not a very big piece of tin foil, and hopefully it should pass without problem, but there is always the chance it could get stuck. I would monitor her over the next 72 hours for signs of obstruction, which include vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, lethargy, and constipation. Should you see any of those signs, I would take her into the vet right away.

If the piece of tinfoil was indeed very small then it will likely leave the body the natural way via the feces. There is a slight chance that it could cause an obstruction, so I would watch Bailey for diarrhea and vomiting and lethargy. If this happens, he will need to be taken to the vet for an x-ray. You can feed him a few spoon-fuls of sauerkraut, which will wrap around the foil and expedite it through the intestines. The sauerkraut may make the stool softer, as it is a natural laxative.

No they should pass ok. I would feed them so the wrappers get through the intestinal tract with the food. If they start vomiting or won't eat or do not pass stool the I would take them right in for an exam and X-rays. As long as they are acting normally it's fine to watch them and wait. Can you take Brody into another vet for a second opinion? Unfortunately I cannot give a definitive one since I can't see him in person. You may feel better speaking to another vet. Given that he's otherwise acting normal, I would agree with your vet you may be able to wait, but if he starts vomiting, has diarrhea, becomes anorexic, and/or very lethargic, then it cannot wait. If he only ate the one wrapper, I wouldn't worry too much. The foil isn't stiff enough or large enough to block or cause damage as it moves through. If it has been less than an hour since your pet ate it, you can induce vomiting by giving an oral dose of hydrogen peroxide, about 1 cc per pound. One tablespoon is about 5 cc. A turkey baster will work if you don't have a syringe. Longer than an hour and it will have already moved into the intestines. Keep an eye on him for a few days to make sue he's okay and watch his feces for evidence that it has come out.

At his size, he should be able to pass it in the next 24-48 hours. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or straining to defecate. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.
